I'm most likely going to be visiting France (from Australia) and some other euro countries in January for over a month. I definitely do not have any adequate clothing for European winter, so I am asking what are the best types of clothing in terms of decent looking and comfort.

I've given thoughts into boots as main shoes
would you consider a thick jacket or layering a couple of pieces over each other
what type of pants/jeans or whatever?
beanies still fine?

I'm 176cm, 60 kgs, im slim but not full ottermode. Definitely not skinnyfat

French guy here.
It kinda depends were you go, but in January theses years its pretty hot, usually around 10°C in January, colder in the north and hotter in the south of france.
I usually wear a middle season jacket and a wool sweater, but if you're visiting you should take a good coat (beware of wind, can be harsh)
As you're gonna walk a lot, I would not recommend boots but rather seakers, and boots if it really starts raining.
For pants, everything is fine.
Hope it helped

I was an Australian there during the winter just gone. I just wore hoodies under my snowboard jacket, jeans and sneakers. I think the thing that'll make the difference are insulative layers. Go to uniqlo and buy a bunch of heat tech stuff, and get some proper explorer wool socks and you'll be fine. Depending on where you go, it's not even that cold

Northern French here. Still no winter, it's been 4 years..
So no snow, it'll rain though. Bring a raincoat or some wool coat with a hood. It'll be 0°c at 7AM then it's all good.
Not too heavy cotton sweater, wool coat, any pants, avoid shorts I guess. Wear a beanie if you want.
