They're both shit but I'd get polo because it's so ubiquitous as to be inconspicuous. Nobody wears Hilfiger.
For a polo I'd consider Brooks Brothers (their branding somehow seems to get a pass in tackiness because I think it doesn't have widespread use as a status symbol) or any number of higher-end brands that don't brand their shirts.
