If you're aiming for >muh brutalest/loonarcoar, get a Thinkpad from 2011 or older (has to have the 6 row keyboard, 9-cell battery, and clitmouse, unlike the shit in the OP). More IBM-alike, the sexier.
Other interesting PCs are UMPCs, old Netbooks, Leemote, and the like. They generally contribute to a genuine-tech vibe ("I actually have a job with computers"), while detracting from a hipster-tech look ("I can program node.js on this bad boy").

I mean, the Pixel supports Coreboot, m8. You can put any payload you want on that machine, and it runs on a full-blown i7. All it takes is a few minutes of effort to put on the custom payload. If you're gay, or otherwise enjoy being anally violated, put NSA/Windows on it. If you actually want to use your computer without being forced to reboot every 10 minutes for updates, put any given Linux or BSD on it. It has pretty much perfect compatibility to my knowledge.

The thinkpad x series are my current favorite, in particular the x220. I still think the t61 is the best, but it's getting really dated now.

Yeah, it's pretty good, but it's really let down by the 16:9 meme screen. It's best to go with an x201/x200 and their S variants if you really love the x2** looks. The processor on the X201 is still perfectly capable of anything you throw at it, and the machine is overall much cheaper, so there's no real reason to buy an x220 over an x201.

well I play UT99/2k4, Xonotic, and Higan SNES emulation (cycle-accurate mode) on my x201, which works just fine (eg 60fps). But playing any game made past 2006 ish won't run pretty much at all (on my machine).
For anything but ayylmao-tier GAYMANG laptops, take your laptop's release date, subtract 4. The top-of-the-line games from that year, you can expect to play nicely. Anything past that will run like ass.
Basically get a laptop for portable work, and a desktop for playing games, if you're into that.

As I said, I'm running an x201 (1 gen behind the x220). The literal only problem with the CPU is playing 4k video (or ULTRA-high bitrate 1080p video, 20mbps+). The screen is 1280x800.
TF2 on either x201 or the x220 would only work with lowspecgamer's mods anyway. If you want something that can play TF2 without a hiccup on default settings, you need something with an HD4000 or later eg x230+. Problem is, x220 was the last good Thinkpad as far as keyboard, clitmouse, trackpad, and general repairability. The next gens are alright, and obviously better than a Macbook or some shit, but nowhere near as good as the x220 and down.

Lenovo 100s if you're on a budget. I have it, works really well, starts in less than 5 seconds, and its as slim as a macbook air. And it's $150.

I'd advise against both the x230 and x220. I mean, the x220 is a great laptop, and the x230 undoubtedly has great internals, but I would really recommend an x201. The 16:10 is really, truly worth it, as is the trackpad and easy repairs (although the x220 is just as good in the last aspect).
You can also swap out the screen for a 1440x900 screen, which is pretty great. It's also easily compatible with Coreboot if you feel like sticking that on there.
Plus, the GPU in the x220 is no better or worse than the x201's, which could play TF2 at 60fps given the right tweaks.
Also the x201 is like $100.

Are you sure? The 220 has a HD3000 and the 230 has a HD4000, while the 201 has a GPU that older than both

It's so neutered though. I wouldn't even consider it a Thinkpad anymore. Thinkpads are supposed to have off center screens and status lights all over the place, they're supposed to have mechanical locks and curved palm rests so the edge of the laptop doesn't dig into your wrists. T450's don't even have the blue enter key anymore.
It's just sad seeing Lenovo ruin a once great brand by trying to make it more accessible to mainstream consumers.
