It's a gambling thing. I get a rush from the risk. It's not about winning (hence no one has to pay me). It's the risk of having to pay. And I like shoes - particularly sneakers. I think a piece of paper is a good frame of reference, to be honest.
Next time, try and estimate based on the scale of the details of the shoe as well - lace size, stitching density, and overall proportion. Just length is not the best indicator of size.

Adding on to this, the paper helps give an understanding of depth and angle. Gamble smart. If you want to make it more specific, you could specify having both shoes, having a specific angle, etc. but the less rules there are the easier it is for people to participate with valid entries.

Probably the only major change I can think of would be to modify the money amounts. Reversing your current order would make sense. It's easy to be off by a half-size, so that should only be $5. If you've fucked up by more than a full-size, that should be $25.
