yeah. there's a reason every single army in the world issues extremely baggy, full-length clothing for use in the field. there are some exceptions where militaries are either lax (and third-world) and some outliers which permit shorts, but it's pretty firmly established that the optimal clothing to wear in the field is extremely baggy, has a bunch of very large pockets, and covers the majority of your body from the elements.
shorts i still think are pretty dumb to be running around in. they're fine for civilians but for the military i feel like you would heavily regret your lack of knee-pads and/or protection from hot things like barrels pretty quickly.

As an avid hunter, I can attest that if you have the balls to let your legs get scratched up, shorts are much quieter when stalking, particularly through thick underbrush like the Rhodesian military would have encountered. Pretty sure they wore the short shorts for stealth.
