To be honest I always thought they were pretty cool, but only on people who fit the whole aesthetic (grimy surfer/hiker, adventurous, outgoing, etc) but then everyone started doing it just because they thought it was the in thing, and it ruined it. Sort of like how americana/heritage got completely bastardized into oblivion by the lumbersexual trend.
