I think this must be a stupid question, but I measured my chest and it's 34 inches, so if I buy clothes like a jacket should I get a jacket with a 34 inch chest? Or like a jacket with a 36 so I have some room?

Definitely go 36; anything smaller and it would be too tight when doing normal range of motion.
