But you probably know more about grade-school trends than I do. I'm looking to get a birthday present for a relative in middle school, and they won't shut up about LED shoes. I thought they meant the pre-school ones everyone had, which was pretty funny, but they meant shoes that have an LED array in the sole that is mildly programmable. Like, sub-raspberry pi programmable.

Anyway, do you guys know where this trend came from? It seems there's no dominant brand of the stuff; just a boatload of the same shoe sold under different names. Surely that's patented; anyone know the parent company?

It's all chinese-made and blew up after a series of videos and vines on the internet of people dancing in them. They are very similar to the "Hoverboard" trend in that yes, there is no parent company and that it became popularized through social media. You can find a few pairs of these shoes in exceptionally low prices on aliexpress.
