it doesn't, there's obviously shitty districts just like everywhere else in the world but if you can afford it, NYC,NY is probably the best city to live in inside the US (unless you prefer a rural life)
>>
What's a good west coast or pacific northwest city? moderate cost of living

i'm getting sick of NY
>>
Paris, if you're rich enough to live in the city itself but poor enough to live an effortlessly aesthetic life of working in a bar, frequenting second-hand stores and fucking bourgeois girls in your tiny apartment.
>>
>>10967668
>>10968078
>if you can afford it

This sums it up pretty well. NYC is great, and has a lot of cool parts, but because of the high costs, many of the people who live there are boring trust fund kids who are pretending to be starving artists.

This drives out the actual creators who are trying to get by with their art, and generally makes NYC more dull as the years go by.

It's also the only city besides LA that people try to use as their personality. Many friends who have moved there suddenly became club kids who have nothing to talk about besides how "totally amazing brooklyn is"

Smaller cities like Philly, Montreal, and Minneapolis are generally less /fa/, but are filled with more down to earth and genuine people. Pick you poison.

I grew up in Charleston and lived there for a total of about 13 years, what I can tell you is that the further south you go, the less "hip" the whole country gets. Its weird, its like Charleston is about 2-3 years behind the rest of the country when it comes to fashion, music, and art. There's just not a high population of artists that have the resources, or the outlet for creativity in that city. I'm a musician and trying to create was is incredibly hard, there's an underground scene but truly talented people are hard to come by. Also everyone there rides either Supreme's or Vineyard Vines' dick, which is bogus. However, the people there are fantastic and the city is beautiful.

Also bist du deutscher? Wiener mit "bizzarem" Akzent (also wienerisch) sterben leider aus und bei jungen Leuten wegen YouTube, RTL etc. gibts nur noch standard langweiliges hochdeutsch :( also ist das heutzutage ziemlich egal. I moved to NY two years ago, I had so many expectations for the city, but I was disappointed. Here is why, realistically:

>The streets are very dirty and the roads are in bad condition
>There is a huge number of homeless people on the streets
>There are parts of the city in which you risk your life if you go ( never go alone in a park)
>The only way to get a job is through connections, since it is so competitive
>At the stores they try to trick you if you mention that you are a foreigner
>The cost of living is too high ( for a family of 4 you spend around $3,000 a month only on groceries and transportation, no bills and no rent included)
>Since I have lived in Europe previously, the life quality here is 100 times poorer, with no time for relaxing, only Work-Home, Work-Home. No time to even see your family.
>There is a triple tax on income : Federal, state and city tax plus SS insurance and Medicare. So if you make $1,200 a week, you are left with approx $750

I moved (from Chicago) to London 3 years ago and had the same experience.

> Huge class divide that I wasn't used to, even with Chicago's racial divide.
> No real public space because there are no benches that aren't being taken up by homeless people
> Oyster card prices climb up as fast as your rent increases, which you generally pay per week, not month
> Nauseating property and rental prices, no jobs that pay you enough to stay

it's an exciting place to be and has so much history to it, but unless you're loaded it's difficult to just get by.

Vancouver is ok. Rich chinese people tend to dress nicely, or totally tastelessly. The downtown area is nice and has some good shopping.

Even better at night really.

I love Lisbon but it needs a few more great clubs. Bairro Alto is pretty cool and Music Box on the Pink Street is decent but I thought it lacked one really great /bleep/ type of club.

But overall I absolutely loved Lisbon whilst there. Plenty of stuff to do and when it gets too hot just bum off on the beach.

I just got an offer from NYU for my Ph.D.

Tuition is waived, and I think I can make around 38k a year from fellowship + maybe an additional 2k per month from TA. Is this enough for NYC?

yah I dunno how honolulu is in any way /fa/

there's likes two boutiques here worth a damn and they're both very generic (the first with rick owens et al. (this one might be closed now actually, it's been so long since I've visited) and the other with engineered garments et al.)

otherwise the urban spaces are fairly low-key, but I live way up in the valley with the Filipinos so it's nothing I'd categorize as /fa/

Who else /nyc/ here?

Currently attending university in Boston, planning on transferring back somewhere in NY. Slightly worried about finding an apartment considering how much trust-fund kiddies have driven the prices up.
>>
>>10979518
yes, definitely - I would say most young people who live in NY are making less than that, working retail/at restaurants (prolly get checks from mommy and daddy tho to supplement) - You can find a decent place for 1200/month in BK fairly easily. You're not going to be balling out but you'll be fine

Sorry to derail thread, /fa/bulous people, I'm looking for advice regarding fashion careers. I'm thinking of moving to another country after Uni but I'm unsure of my best option.

Pros
>Fashion Design degree (soon)
>bilingual level english, have toefl
>currently reside in Brazil but I'm a swiss national, so EU citizen
>if I pick England, I have a close friend in London to help me move/have a place until I'm settled
>clean criminal record, white (not latino), young, a /fa/ggot
>loads of non-work related experience, including social programs/philantropy
>I literally have the highest grades out of all currently enrolled students, can provide recommendation letters from professors

Cons
>no work experience (yet)
>I don't speak any other language besides english, portuguese and basic spanish (though I'm willing to learn)

Halp please, any advice is welcome.
