i just got the back trimmed on mine cuz i was in the same stage. trimming will obviously make it take longer to get to a point where you can tie it but if you're not going specifically for a bun I'd say go to a good stylist and get the back/bottom thinned out and blended.

Try a product similar to John Frieda's Frizz Ease serum or Lush's R&B. Basically a light weight conditioning gel that you can leave in your hair without it looking greasy.
I've been using R&B lately by putting a little bit on my fingers, warming it up by rubbing my hands together a bit, and combing through the ends. Really makes a difference and smells amazing too.

I actually just used this shitty $2 Garnier Fructis in the pics from 2014-2015. Back when I shampoo'd everyday (earlier pictures), my hair would get extremely greasy in just 24 hours (which is why I shampoo'd everyday). But then I slowly weened myself off of shampoo and eventually it would take weeks for my hair to get greasy. Did that for a while, shampooing every 2 weeks or so, then I just stopped altogether.
