I live in a city with about 350.000 residents, with relatively a lot of 20-somethings, lots of students and starters. It's probably the third of fourth biggest city in my country.
There's a lot of fashionable people walking around if you start to take notice. Some would get applauded in WAYW threads. Yet the only people I know that browse 4chan or /fa/ are the more secluded, weird ones.
I think it's common knowledge that /fa/ sets the bar ridiculously high for itself, which doesn't translate well to the real world, only creates more distance. I think I've seen just one really short kid walking around with Ricks.
I don't browse /fa/ very often anymore, but when I did, it just made me depressed. I was quite self-conscious but had no idea how to get better style. I'd been browsing /mu/ a lot and fell into /fa/. I guess in some way /fa/ did help me think about my style in a different way, but quitting /fa/ and using the outside world for frame of reference has helped me a great deal in raising my self-image. I can only imagine what it must be like for people that are into thinspo and all that. /fa/ is ridiculous.
Basically, stop using /fa/ you /fa/ggots. It will just make you more depressed.
