I do not want to dissuade anyone from trying out various styles for the sake of experimentation and finding something that really fits you. However as many people have noted, prep is a lot more than how you dress. Sure that sounds decidedly retarded but prep, even when done well, is essentially fratcore if you are outside of New England/upper East coast area.
Even if you mix your colors perfectly, have the right shoes, the right belt, the right sunglasses and the right look, it will look cringey in southern California. Entirely because it is evident just via location that you are in fact not the 'young Kennedy' that you are trying so hard to be. It is probably better to derivate your own personal type of prep based on where you are rather than reading Take Ivy and imagining your days strolling across the Prospect Gardens and comparing trust funds and sailing knots with your contemporaries. Additionally; As unfortunate as it is to say, prep is essentially 'babbies first fashion' for most people meaning that it is not nearly half as original or unique as the pictures of idyllic 1970s Dartmouth have you believe. That isn't to imply that you shouldn't do something because it is popular and trade out your VVs for a Julius shirt and assless chaps with your dick hanging out, but have no expectation of originality or uniqueness and be wholly content to blend in on fraternity row on any college campus in the United States.

Jack Donnelly is good. I got a pair in slim fit when they did their kickstarter. They changed the fit recently though, so I can't say about fit, but quality and styling are on point. I like the adjustable waistband, deep pockets, coin pocket, and longish rise.
PRL chinos are good quality as well, same deep pockets, coin pocket, acceptable rise, except no adjustable waistband.
