The only reason people associate fedoras with the right-wing is because they loathe feminism because they can't get laid, and they are extremely proud to be atheists and denounce God. In most other aspects though they are usually more progressive than the right.

I've heard someone try to explain it this way:
The Right dresses the way it does because its adherents like traditionalism and gender roles. Guys feel compelled to wear suits and "traditional" American clothing, but also don't like to seem like they put in effort and look feminine. The party is also very connected with rural voters, which - in my experience - tend to take a sort of pride in being simple and uncomplicated - t-shirts over ties. The net effect is a lot of bad Brooks Brothers blazers and shit like that.
The Left is the opposite and tries to embody progressive mores in their clothing and is significantly less comfortable with traditional gender roles in clothing. Thus, guys will gravitate more towards skinny jeans and the like. There's an attempt to be more multi-cultural (i.e. take fashion cues from foreign countries) and not nearly the sort of push to being uncomplicated.
This has always been kinda a fascinating topic to me. For example: /fit/ found a bunch of data a while back indicating that lifters were more likely to lean to the right and runners were more likely to lean left.
