Nah man, most clubs, at least in Australia, are free before 11pm, and its only expensive if you make it expensive, just buy cheap alcohol, get drunk beforehand and go inside for free, what me and my friends do pretty perfectly, and can sneak in a water bottle full of vodka easily, just have it in a jacket, they never check.

Chicago and Detroit still have those clubs. SmartBar is the best club in Chicago imo, can't speak for Detroit because I've never lived there, but the UR is still widely appreciated and revered in the midwest
clubs in NY are usually terrible, that's because most people who matter go to events/parties instead that are one-off things. Usually parties at China Chalet (chinese restaurant that gets rented out for events in Financial District) are a who's who of the art/fashion world. In Bushwick Trans Pecos hosts a lot of noise and minimal electro shows that cool people show up to (Psychic TV was last weekend but the snowstorm canceled it). Baby's All Right is pleb-tier usually but it has alright shows, it's just that it's in Williamsburg and Williamsburg people show up. Secret parties are kind of corny/pretentious but the Unter ones are definitely /fa/ as fuck and pretty fun. Harlem occasionally has a decent thing in the summer months and anything in between 32nd street and 125th street is not worth going to.

SWG3 seems to be the new Arches (it hosts pressure which was the biggest night there).
Sub Club is always a good shout but you already knew that.
La Cheetah is decent as well and gets some impressive bookings considering it's only got 150 capacity.
Berkeley suite is quality and has more expansive genres (although it has some good dance nights as well).
Just don't go to Garage, ABC, Kokomo, any G1 place, Victorias, Savoy etc. as they exist to keep the arseholes away from the decent clubs
