The second definition on meme status only applies to online communities and articles of clothing that fit in this category will not be considered memes outside of those online communities i.e. the real world.
Note: Just because something is a meme doesn't mean something is bad, quite contrary actually, it just means it is popular, and mostly for a good reason, and you might get associated with mindless trend followers.

I wouldn't even say ridicule, it just has the bad "dressed by the internet" stigma. People still can pull off those items and /fa/ wouldn't give you shit for wearing Geo Baskets if they compliment your fit. /fa/ will however give you shit for wearing Geo Baskets with a regular fit that makes them stick out like a sore thumb or with a fit that everyone else wears them with.
The biggest problem with "memes" is, that fashion is about expressing yourself and finding your own style, so wearing the item everyone wears or hypes can be kinda problematic, because it doesn't make you stand out as an individual but rather blend in with a group.
