He attained the rare status of icon, everybody recognizes him at a glance, from any of his many distinguishing features.
Not many of the better dressed presidents or candidates holds the same visual impact.
You might not enjoy that kind of attention, but for him it's a godsend. Even bad publicity is good publicity, and attacking a candidate's dress sense, even when it's clearly true, takes attention away from more important matters, and feels like a cheap attack, in turn strengthening the Trump.
