Actually companies like TOMS that go in and distribute clothing for free only further the dependency that underdeveloped countries, nations and areas already have on the "developed" countries that are funneling trillions of dollars in aid.
When cargo ships full of clothing, shoes, and basic life amenities arive in these areas everything is given away for "free" in the spirit of "generosity" and WWJD. However, the unintended consequence of this overwhelming generosity is that it drives down the cost of these items to the point of bottoming out any existing market.
There may be a guy who as gone away to learn how to make shoes and comes back to the city to practice his cobbling trade. However with three shipping containers of TOMS shoes sitting in the african sun, his trade has zero value and cannot support him.
These companies and initiatives would have a much further reaching and long lasting effect if they taught people how to make shoes, sent over manufacturing equipment and the supplies to MAKE shoes to encourage local economies to develop outside of western aid.
