How fake is this?
>>
>>10835527
Fake but probably indistinguishable from the real thing, since the real watch is itself also just overpriced Alibaba-tier cheap bullshit.
>>
>>10835275
or a raketa zero for the same price
>>
>>10835527

>>
>>10835643
This isn't a smart way to go about it. It all depends on the vendor, but you can reasonably bet that the $40 fake will have better internals than the $4 fake.
>>
>>10835677
>you can reasonably bet that the $40 fake will have better internals than the $4 fake

by that logic the authetic one should be best
protip: it's not

I'm 90% sure all of the fakes are the same movement, but feel free to throw your money away
>>
>>10835682
No, you don't understand my point. $4 will not buy you good watch internals - it's a crapshoot at that price point. I'm sure we've all had $40-$60 watches from no-name brands that have lasted us for many many years. There's a price premium attached to the internals in watches like those - it's certainly not as high as the price premium attached to name brands, but I can guarantee you it's higher than $4. I'm obviously not saying that it's a guarantee, but it's a reasonable assumption to make from a decent seller.

This is a very basic point, and it should be easy to understand. Your condescending tone is completely unwarranted.
>>
>>10835691
And you're missing my point: authentic DW cost 200 dollars and have a worse movement than the aliexpress fakes for 5 dollars.

Price and quality have no bearing on eachother when it comes to fashion watches, which is why you should be prepared to spend money on an actual good watch. Unless you know that there are different people manufacturing fakes (fat chance), you're getting the exact same stuff at a higher price.
>>
>>10835682
>>10835691
To your last point, actually, I *thought* I had a photo on my laptop with a comparison of two. I can't find it, but I bought a fake Bulgari for around $10 USD in Istanbul and a fake Armani for around $30 in Serbia. The $30 one has substantially better internals, and has lasted me six years now with just a battery change. The Bulgari's internals broke after a couple of years.
>>
>>10835701
>authentic DW cost 200 dollars and have a worse movement than the aliexpress fakes for 5 dollars.
Okay, so that's where the issue is - I'm not talking about any specific watch. I don't know the brand DW; I'm speaking as someone who's owned around five fake watches with varying results. You, on the other hand, have baseless conjecture.

Literally every post I've made has made a point to say that the BRAND PREMIUM has no bearing on the quality of the internals, so I'm not sure who or what you think you're arguing against.

You know I'm a different person than the poster you were discussing the DW thing with, right?

Also what kind of strap should I get? The CCCP strap it comes on actually looks decent but I'm guessing it's going to be cheap and awful in person so I'm planning on replacing it.

I'm not sure if I want a leather one similar to the one it comes on or a two-piece cloth one like pic related. There's also the obvious meme answer of putting it on a Nato but I think that would look like shit. Maybe a Perlon, since that's the hot new meme strap, but I think that would probably look like shit too.

Everything Citizen makes just always has a Seiko alternative which is superior in my opinion. I don't dislike Citizen and their watches are perfectly fine but none of them has ever really fully convinced me. The SARX in pic related costs less than that watch, has a movement of the same tier, has styling which is similar but better in my opinion, and looks to be better finished.

In the watch world they're really not that expensive. 7-15k for a watch isn't that much money if you've got a decent professional job. Think doctors, lawyers, accountants, pharma etc.

Consider the fact that there are many watches north of 50k, a rolex is not that absurd.

Yes, normal people wear them quite often.

I live in asia where this shit is pretty much de riguer for daily life if you want to be perceived as successful and thus actually become successful (one usually leads into the other).

However, unlike older generations where a small rolex gold datejust was standard attire, wrist dinner plates with a million superfluous and distracting subdials sit heavy on the girly wrists of asia's up and coming youth (and old men with too much free time and viagra).

It really is ridiculous, and the reason why rolex increased their cases sizes after resisting the big watch meme longer than everyone else: the only market buying luxury watches in great abundance anymore is in asia, not europe or america like the past.

Boom boom times in the far east, time to buy a luxury watch (it can be ugly as sin, "I want the daytona/bigbang/royal oak ugly edition/seadweller deepsea that's too big for my manlet wrist because it's more expensive than that other guy's well suited and fitting datejust").

Brave new world.
>>
>>10838671
Rolex produces over one million watches every year. They're not rare or exclusive or anything, they're very common. They may be very good watches and all but I don't understand why people think they're so special when they are so mass produced and literally everyone recognizes Rolex immediately.

>>
>>10838671
In the world of watches, they don't cost that much.

I didn't care for them myself when I first started looking for a nice watch, but over time I've come to realize that most of their offerings tick all the right boxes.

Rolex watches are the ultimate safe timepieces/jewelry/accouterments a man can buy.

They really are the safe, generic choice, and before I thought this was bad but in time have come to like their over done (over done because they're copied by others to death) styling.

Here's how it went with me: Looking for a dressier/casual-dressy watch, a final watch, that one watch that doesn't ever have to leave my wrist no matter what I wear or am doing because I'm in a "buy it once, buy it well" mode and cbf anymore.

My 2254 seamaster pro is nice, but not with a suit. Too sporty, and incongruous with my shirt cuffs.

I scanned the alternatives and it came down to Grand Seiko, and Rolex.

I wanted something: very well made so as to last a very long time - a lifetime and more hopefully;
-valuable (as in valuable beyond a few neckbears online - something with ubiquitous value, because an item with value can be traded if it ever came to that, for me or whatever spawn I leave the watch to when I shrug off this mortal coil);
-with some kind of pedigree or history - some lineage of craftsmanship and in-house production (which both seiko and rolex posses in droves with seiko predating rolex);
-an everywhere wearer: so that means screw down crown for water resistance, but not too sporty looking as I have that.
JLC's et. al., and all that are nice, but their dressy models are strictly dry formal business only, and their sporty stuff is too sporty, same with so many other brands;
-has to be made where it says it's made (so, in this case switzerland or japan)
This pretty much cuts out 90% of "swiss" watches out there (and low end jap watches but they're not part of my survey). I love my omega, but am under no illusions about the swatch group.
>>
>>10842332
/cont
By my count, Rolex is one of the only swiss manufacturers that can truly claim (not according to that bullshit swiss law) that they're made in switzerland.

I don't trust the large conglomerates like Swatch, LVMH or Richemont, and the other independents don't fit the profile, aren't in-house or just shit.

Seiko's high end offerings are probably the only watches in the world that are 100% in house, so I'm talking everything down to the lubricating oils, lume compound and jewels. They make it all. Seiko is the only mass conglomerate I trust in this regard.

So it comes down to these two makers.

Here is how they differ and why I'm leaning towards Rolex in the end:

I love the Grand Seikos I've seen. So many say they're far better finished compared to Rolex, I'd believe it even if I haven't taken a loupe to them to compare myself - I know from experience that the Japs are the only ones to make Swiss people looks sloppy.

BUT, servicing a GS is pain. The only model I'm currently interested in is a highbeat that will likely require more frequent servicing than a standard movement.

So that's up to 6 months without the watch every 3-5 years (they say 3 for highbeat but whatever) as it gets serviced to keep it from needing costlier repairs.

A Rolex can be serviced, and full out repaired, in any city on this earth worth living in.
This is a convenience that cannot be denied.

Secondly, spare parts:
Like that other anon mentioned, rolex churns out millions of units every year, many with identical internal components.

If, some time in the far future, this watch needs replacement parts then finding them will not be hard.
GS, whose output is far smaller and whose official wording of ceasing parts production 10 years after the model is OOP, means that this will likely be a bitch for anyone in the future that needs GS parts.
>>
File: image.jpg (178 KB, 1025x819) Image search: [Google]

I've asked at least four fucking times, but nobody points me in the right direction.

I want a basic, all around casual watch for 100-400£ (142$-568$).

Recommend some cool watches in that price range that you don't need a special outfit to pull off. Throw em at me.
>>
>>10842368
/Final

Lastly, the Rolex has more "value". Despite it's likely superiority in accuracy, finish and what have you, GS's are unfortunately undervalued by the market compared to your steel men's rolex.

This isn't such a big issue for me, as I'm the hoarder type that has never sold anything 2nd had and hopefully never will have to.

But if things don't change for Seiko's general perception in the luxury arena, Rolex is still likely to be the crowned king of the mid-range luxury timepiece hill for some time to come.

The idea that some twerp tangentially related to me inheriting my watch and discarding it or not fighting to get it repaired because it's "just a seiko" (if they can still manage coherent thought by that age at all) bother me.

I can't see the future, I just know that rolexs are more valued, and so I must project the only data I have and guess that this discrepancy between the two will be maintained for some time to come.

So when it comes down to it (daily wearer/oystercase screw down/worn with everything any time), I'll likely be picking up an explorer 1, or some kind of datejust variant I like for my forever watch (for when I'm not wearing the smp).

It's the safe choice, but it just ticks all my boxes.

Yeah the black dial looks like shit I think. There's also a whole bunch of white dial special commemorative ones made for the Western market with a big hammer and sickle on them that say Glasnost and those seem to go surprisingly cheap even in decent condition, but I think that's way too commie for me and like any other "special edition commemorative" Russian watch there's always a high probability that they're frankensteins or fakes.

If there's nothing good on ebay just wait a while and check again, there's plenty of slav watches floating around and something good will come up eventually.

Not comparable in price but vastly superior to every Rolex, except parts availability
>>

I ordered a blue mako from them about 5 or 6 years ago.
They're in Singapore, I'm in Thailand (mako's had run out here at that time).

I asked them to please lie on the Fedex form, say it was $15 dollars rather than 100 or whatever it was then, because I'd be raped by customs fees and post office bribery bullshit. (up to 70% on luxury goods - year fuck off).

So they sent it all fine. It sat in the fedex storage here for too long, then I got a call asking me to confirm the cost of the watch ie. send them an invoice because presumably they thought there had been a mistake on the declaration form.

I seriously hate these courier fucks; try to squeeze out every last customs commission.

So I edited the invoice skywatch sent me, turned it into a pdf and sent it off.
Had my mako that afternoon.

Fucking fedex.
Skywatch was most obliging at the time, I have no idea if their reputation has been maintained up to the present, however.

>Not comparable in price but vastly superior to every Rolex, except parts availability
Not comparable at all m8ty.
This thing is more suited to be compared to haute horlogerie type shit: the old classic greats, the new small greats (Journe, Voutilainen et.al.).

But yeah, Rolex trumps them all in regards to potential longevity due to a mountainload of spare parts and donor watches available now until forever.

It's a luxury watch brand.
It's jewelry that ticks.
It's gonna cost what it costs because they say so. If people want to buy it at the asking price then whatever.

Their internal mechanisms are outsourced but modified (they have since started to engineer their own in-house stuff).

Their designs are their own; if you want something that looks like a UN, then you'll have to buy their asking price (supply and demand nigga, do you speak it?)

They were up until recently independent, but have just been bought by one of the luxury goods conglomerates so expect shit to get more boring with less innovation, more shit and more expensive from here on out.

IMO unless you have a hard on for their looks, they're nothing special compared to everything else available.

They were actually designed for sale in seiko's third world markets (those that couldn't afford to benefit intially from seiko's quartz revolution since that shit was expensive when it first debuted).

They're prime for deepest darkest africa or shitfuckistan where replacement batteries and fragile electronics are hard or impossible to come by.

In other words, they're sturdy as shit for what they are and you basically wear them until they wear out.
>>
>>10848102
This model was larger than I what's traditionally a dress watch of that style.

If it were 38mm maybe, but it wears like a 42mm and that's sport watch territory, or shit dinnerplate-esque fashion watch territory.

Shame as it's a fairly inexpensive moonphase complication watch.

They're expressly made for seniors desiring easy readability with a watch face.
Plain (some say bland), uncluttered dials with timex's indiglo night light which will be useful for an old man bothered by a prostrate in the early hours.

Can you explain/expand on this?
>>
>>10855105
Swatch whores out a bunch of well loved historic brand names to shovel a bunch of shitty watches and they're all intentionally gimped to make Omega look better by comparison, and Omega itself is not as great as they would want you to believe. Someone on /g/ put it pretty accurately when they said that Swatch wants Omega to be perceived as 95% as good as Rolex while making 50% of the effort.

Omega uses movements largely made by ETA (their sister company in the Swatch conglomerate) before being assembled by Omega which wouldn't be so bad in and of itself except that they pretend that Omega is all in-house when that's complete bullshit.

They also are always bragging about being Swiss and having Swiss heritage and shit and yet their watches are made in China as much as possible while having only a minimal amount of the final finishing work completed in Switzerland to allow the watches to be legally stamped as "Swiss Made". Basically most Omegas today have movements with 50% of the parts made in Asia, bracelets made in China, and cases that are stamped out elsewhere before being polished and finished in Switzerland and yet their marketing fluff shit would have you believe that the watches are lovingly made by hand from start to finish by shaky old Swiss master craftsmen elves hunched over a workbench when really the production process is the same highly automated globalized supply chain shit that any other product goes through.

>>
>>10855652
Take all the shit I talked about Omega and triple it, TAG is trash. Heuer was a once great company that got bought out by TAG and turned to shit. They literally bought a movement design from Seiko and touted is as being this super great all-Swiss movement they had invented and built all in-house. Then a while later it turned out they weren't even manufacturing it all themselves, they had trouble with some of the parts so they asked Seiko to produce them for them.

>Tag Heuer, a unit of French luxury group LVMH said a deal it announced on Wednesday to use parts from Seiko Instruments Inc. would not hurt its "Swiss made" image as the company is a member of the Swiss Chronometry Society.
So Seiko is not good enough to please the "only the Swiss can make good watches" crowd, but they're good enough to hold Swiss watchmakers' hands and do all the hard work for them.

>Mfw people thought I bought my Tudor because I couldn't afford a Rolex

It's not like I'm going to correct them. I'd rather have people think I'm poor. Still, the stigma is interesting.

That's why people who buy things for the sake of impressing others make themselves miserable and never impress anyone anyway. I would take a Pelagos over a SubC any day (but not a classic aluminum bezel 40mm sub), and I love the Heritage Chrono and the Ranger and the North Flag. I like their vintage stuff too, I've been hunting ebay for a good Oysterdate for months now.

I love Tudor, it's a shame people finally picked up on the association with Rolex and so prices have started rising both for current models and for vintage stuff, and it seems like moving to inhouse movements and jacking up the prices sort of defeats the whole purpose of starting Tudor as a separate brand in the first place.
