Ive got a pair because liked the way they looked. Definitely go with matte. Shiny/glossy looks kinda bad imo. Really comfortable boots.

In general, shined boots will make scuffs more noticeable. IF you HAVE to have Doc Martens instead of actual black works boots or black combat boots, go smooth. They'll look nicer for longer and they take leather preservative better. Just don't expect them to last long if you're doing anything heavy duty in them.

Ideally I would be able to find a pair that is already pretty beaten up but I can't anywhere. I wish I could find another brand of shoe that looks similar but I can't either. Redwing postmans look too autistic imo

@OP would go with smooth, I have smooth brown leather ones for like a year and a half now and I've been really satisfied. Works through the shitty autumn and spring weathers as well as the cold and harsh winter. Took a few weeks to properly break them in but they are actually really comfy and good for walking imo.

Don't go with regular. But the For Life ones to be honest. They are cheaper than the English ones and have a better warranty. The material and construction is very comparable too, I actually own a pair of both.

I'm my experience, you're right. The leather on the For Life boots is a bit more waxy and flexible. The English boots are much stiffer, and take longer to really form to your feet. The portions of my made in England 1460s that don't flex still feel like cardboard even after like 10 years of wear. However, they look amazing when shined up and of course you have the satisfaction of owning something British made instead of from some sweatshop in Asian. I bought a pair of 10 eye regular Chinese DMs and they got cracks in the leather after less than 3 years of wear. I wouldn't recommend for serious wear.
Personally I would wait and buy the For Life boots, but the English made boots are a good choice too.

Sure, no problem. To be honest I just kept them clean, and polished them with black Kiwi polish when they got scuffed. I also use Neatsfoot oil to keep the leather from cracking. Dr Martens sells that Wonder Balsam stuff on their website and I've used it before, but I sort of prefer Neatsfoot in general.
