I have the same problem and it's not this.
Posing in front to of the mirror I think my face looks great, but can't quiet get the same look when trying to do a self portrait with my phone.
I think if I put my DLSR on a tripod with a timer and took a picture of myself like that it would turn out okay, but I've been too lazy to try.
