How to into watches?
Whats the difference between a quartz and an automatic?
What makes one superior/better choice than the other barring the price?
What are good starting watches? Been looking into metal straps with a more "adult" look e.g. Seiko and omegas

For that kind of money, the closer you'll get to a good watch that resembles the desired look, is the Spaceview from Accutron. It's a vintage watch of which there are several available on ebay and other auction websites.

I think there is now also, a modern rendition of it, although I'm not quite sure.

Am kinda looking for advice in this thread, I've never really been interested in watches but my friends convinced me to look around for one. I seen some of the Rotary Skeleton watches and was interested instantly by them. I've came across one from Rotary called the Aquacore which i had seen online and am now considering purchasing one.
>pic related
Any advice/thoughts on the watch and Rotary as a brand? I'll take all the advice I can get since am only dipping my toe into the pool of watch enthusiasm. All i know is if am going to invest into buying a watch I'd preferably like the watch to be automatic.

Rotary is trash and skeleton watches are a cheap ugly gimmick because there's no need to be showing off that poorly finished ugly no-name movement. Skeleton watches are maybe ok if your watch is a $400,000 work of art but even then I'm not necessarily a huge fan.
>>
>>10730335
some people like their warranty but it's just a brand that slaps cheap quartz movemetns into fashion case watches

and the warranty isn't even THAT great it's lifetime but you have to get it serviced every 2 years for your life

after the first servicing you paid for the watch.......again

>>
>>10730375
I love and admire how a watch works, i think the complexity has a form of beauty of careful and creative engineering that deserves to be displayed imo. I can understand why some would prefer a watch dial and don't get me wrong, i think dials can be just as beautiful but for me, what makes a watch special is the beauty that makes it work.

No.

Why don't more cars have engine display widows?

1. Safety reasons (the vehicle must retain its integrity upon collision)

2. Practical reasons (engine vapors/fluids getting all over the place)

Engines are fascinating pieces of engineering, even domestic and/or relatively inexpensive ones. I wouldn't mind having a glass hood myself, as I admire the engine on my car when I pop the hood, except for the above reasons.

In addition, the car posted above had no hood. that's impractical and a sign that the driver is unable to afford a repair. Skeleton watches have their movements under glass/crystal. They are specifically designed that way, not a flaw that needs repair.

They can be interesting to look at, admire the design, even if it is a no-name movement.

on the plus side, paul smith makes some nice-looking dials. designer/fashion brands put all their attention into that part of the watch, and often times it shows.

the quartz movement in this one is made in japan and is the same that you'd find in some citizen watches (miyota is a subsidiary of citizen).

so then you ask the question: is it worth it? for the retail price, you can get a decent little automatic like a hamilton jazzmaster. but if what interests you about this watch are the details on the dial (the specific colors, typography, hands), and you're just in love with it, go ahead and cop... but only if you can find it at a steep discount (i wouldn't pay more than $200).

all in all, a more tasteful fashion watch than most that get asked about here. i'd like it even more on a chocolate leather strap.

the reason why lower end mechanicls don't offer a bigger window in skeleton watches is that exposes the lack of finishing work and many times on watches like yours i can see casting lines and sloppy flashing on the cast (not forged like higher end pices) with a loupe

it's also why exhibition case backed watches engrave information the the BIG AS FUCK counterweight that hides most of the movement.

and includes a baseplate that doesn't really have to be there

Is there any reason not to wear a woman's watch? How do you even distinguish between them? Just the size?
>>
>>10733146
>is there any reason not to wear a woman's watch
depends on the model.
>how do you even distinguish between them?
on some models, literally the only difference is size. maybe a lug width that's 1 or 2 mm thinner (more narrow strap).

on other models, there are subtle differences in the case. softer contours.

as you get more feminine, there are things like jewel accents on the dial and face. a bracelet that's more jewelry-like.

if you're into vintage watches, most of them are the size (or smaller) as women's watches today.

>>

Thank you.
The simple design (no one who isn´t into watches could tell the price) and the used materials just got me.
Had to decide between a Rolex Datejust II, the explorer and the Omega Aqua Terra.
After about a year I still do not regret that. A friend of mine got himself a rolex daydate and it looks pretty, but also pretty worn.
I know, the mechanics are nothing special, but I wanted something that will surely last.
>>
>>10733301
should add that the shadow created is a nice, subtle, nod to sundials and historical timekeeping, which i'd have to imagine was part of the thinking. (the designer being a trained architect who would have spent a long time thinking shadow and three-dimensionality was probably the main influence on the result.)

but again, my point stands. a nice clock, but not a great watch.

i'm really not talking about provenance in this case. just speaking formally. the seiko'd design is half-baked and unattractive in my opinion. the 12'oclock dot so small that you wonder what the point is, the text location mars the face and makes it look cheap.

if you like it, that's fine. on a purely aesthetic level, the movado museum strikes a better balance. seiko makes a lot of great-looking watches. i just don't think that's one of them.

That watch is a cheap Chinese piece of shit marked up a whole bunch to sell to people who don't know any better. You can either get a similarly shit no-name minimalist Chinese watch from Alibaba for like $20 at most, or you can spend the $200 or whatever that you would've spent on that on an actually good budget watch from a real watch company like Seiko, Casio, Orient, Citizen, Timex, etc.

>>
>>10731951

Looks like shit overall. Ask anyone around you what they think about that watch.
>>
>>10734959
>Ask anyone around you what they think about that watch.
Not him, but it being "out of fashion" is exactly why I'd wear it. Individuality over conformity. With a black strap, it loses its stodginess and would look absolutely fantastic. If you don't dress like a grandpa, the watch won't magically make you one. And if I'm the only one wearing a tank, all the better.

People in general are scared of sticking out, hence every other dude of a certain demo sporting a speedy pro or rolex. You hear them talking about resale value and "safe investments". How boring can you get. Boring choices, boring people.

Think they look nicer than the Max Bill.

You know I read something recently...
>My elementary school teacher told us this and I’ve never forgotten it: “If I tell everyone in the class to write the kanji for ‘sunny’ (晴), then each and every one of you is going to write it a little bit differently from each other. That’s what ‘individuality’ is. But, if I tell everyone to write the kanji for ‘sunny,’ and you write the kanji for ‘rainy’ (雨) instead, you might think you’re being cool by being different from everyone, but that’s not what ‘individuality’ is.”

wearing a different watch is expressing individuality. it's a tiny part of your appearance.

rainy kanji would be wearing cosplay fits to work.

opinions?

Damn. Richard Mille almost forgot to put a watch in one of their ugly cases. My guess is next year it'll finally happen and they'll just make a bracelet on accident.
>>
>>10735589
if you're getting it to impress other people, don't.

if you're considering paying retail, don't.

if you're absolutely in love with it, and you dream about it, and you covet it, i won't try to stop you because fashion and desire are irrational and i've been there, but for perspective know that the thing inside the case making the watch run costs like $20, and be aware that these watches routinely go on sale for more than half-off.

TAG HUEHUE/10
That company has been garbage since they were bought out by TAG and anything from them that isn't a chrono is even worse.

I have 4 Timex quartz watches and have had them up to 5 years, battery is still going also. Range $20-60. Just picked up a basic Casio terrorist watch as well for my outdoors on a budget.
>>
>>10736256
holy shit, how retarded are you.
>>
>>10736201
I have this watch, perfect size, although because the movement is so cheap, it is so loud. Can't sleep with it next to you. Ask me a question if you want.

post a link that works.
I think I know which one that is though. was looking to buy it myself. solid choice. I don't know which dial color you want though. comes in white, black and blue.

I was thinking about getting a Rolex Daytona replica for 219€ as my first watch. Its white-gold with a brown leather strap. Any ideas?

Yes it's that one, and it's going for 100 dollars now, it would be stupid not to cop right? Titanium face and strap and sapphire crystal, movement looks really nice but I'm not sure how good it is.
>>
>>10739108
>it would be stupid not to cop right?

absolutely. definitely cop it

>movement looks really nice but I'm not sure how good it is..

it's a reliable seiko quartz movement. nothing bad at all about it.
