For real though, are they even practical anymore? Other than just sitting there and looking pretty does it make any sense to wear these things?

Watches are just accessories now, unless you're too lazy to take your phone out of your pocket or you live in a bad city where taking your phone out of your pocket=being stabbed, then they serve a purpose

They show you that I'm richer than you, and shows the world that im rich and i get treated bettwr as a result. That's extremely practical.

You do realize that people in professional settings can't pull out their phone when they need to tell the time?
It's a lot better to glance down at a watch while working/talking than reaching down, getting in your pocket, dragging out your phone, pressing the home button, staring at it, reading a notification, ignoring what the other person is saying, and then shove it back?

If you sometimes do things with your hands that don't involve a computer, that prevent you from pulling out your phone from your pocket, and you have a life with responsibilities and obligations which require you to know the time, yes they're practical.

But then obviously city dwellers on wellfare of which there are many around here don't really have such problems.

That's true. For some reason people want to bring up the best case scenario and it's kind of silly.

One method of telling the time is just as convenient as the other. We all have preferences. That's it. I'll use my watch to tell the time, day, and date. I'll use my phone to do exactly the same and so much more. In fact, I'm such a special snowflake, I'll use both.

How are people still this retarded? Glancing at your wrist takes a microsecond, which is ten times more convenient than the 10 microseconds it may take to take out your phone. There are many social situations where it would be rude to straight-up take out your phone, or if you're at work, in a lecture and want to know the time but not be disrespectful, at church, a meeting (part of these things called jobs), etc. etc. Kill yourself.

When working with billable hours like for example lawyers do, a watch is extremely convenient to not lose track of the time while working on a client's case and full focus is needed.

If you are only working with a phone you will get too much distracted (same with reading of computer screens all day) and in general you will be less able to constantly track your time expenditure.

So, yes, maybe for some people a watch is unnecessary, but for other it might be very useful.

And of course what others already said: it's very convenient to quickly glance at the time without being disrespectful.

Mvmnt like countless other no-name brands buys their movements from a third party. Those third parties make their movements very small because that means the same movement can fit into any size watch so they can sell a single movement to as many buyers as possible. It means that they took whatever movement they could get their hands on for cheap and threw it into their watch and let that determine the proportions and aesthetics of the watch rather than choosing proportions that actually look good. It also means that you can bet the watch is enormous.

Mvmnt doesn't get to design the movement because it's already a given so they have to design the dial to fit the movement. The movement determines where all the attachment points for the hands are, you can't just put stuff wherever you want it to be because the subdials have to be centered around those points. It also determines where the date window will be. Every movement also only puts out a certain amount of torque so it can limit how heavy and how long the hands can be.

Hope this photo helps explain it, it took me 9001 hours in paint.

not that anon, but if the dials are spaced out at the three, six and nine (or twelve) then its got a 'better' movement than ones that have dials all clustered in one area? Also, what makes these chink watches 'bad'? Pic related, some one bragged about getting this for like $5 on ebay
>>
>>10695797
It's not a "bad watch" It's a cheap watch with a stupid mark up for stupid people

It's shitty business practice

No one has a problem with the f-91w because it is honest about what it is and people love it.

If casio tried to sell it for $140 with some pseudo heritage people would be pissed
>>
>>10689178
It is jewelry. It is not supposed to be the most functional thing in the world. The small function that it does carry is the excuse used to make it acceptable as a man to wear it. Men can't wear jewelry because "that's gay", but as long as it has a small function it can pass society's standards.

Also I always miss my watch when I don't wear it. Having a cell phone is not the same thing. And some people work in a professional environment, such as doctors in hospitals, where it would be considered rude to pull out the cell phone. Watches have more practical uses in the health care setting such as measurement of pulse and respiration rate.

No problem. Here's part of the Seiko NH35A data sheet, for example. Look at the "regulation hands unbalance" section.
>>
>>10689178
Wearing a watch is heritage, tradition and often more convenient.
Some people also try to walk through life without constantly staring at an electronic screen and 'experience the real world'.

Two experiments I suggest you do:
> Go stand at a busy street junction at night in a busy metropolitan area Tokyo, Shanghai or NY should do the trick and just take in the experience while also looking how your dials moves with the seconds. It is breathtaking.
Especially with those older Mondaine watches which stopped for 2 seconds at 12.

>If you aren't into that, try going on an (Icelandic) hiking trip. Your G-Shock will be more convenient than your $1000 iPhone.

Just some random thoughts.
>>
Also good luck trying to pull out your phone on a packed train while sitting without disturbing people.

Or generally i think its far more disrespectful to look at a phone whilst in a conversation.
>>
>>10695918
Interesting. Never connected hand length with the movement itself. Watches are really intricate creations.
Have recently been hearing the term tourbillion a lot, especially in somewhat fancier watches.

Experiences perhaps? Quality? Worth it?
>>
>>10695954
I think they're boring and they've really increased their prices a bunch in the last few years and not really for any good reason, but they're pretty good and I guess they're nice enough looking if you don't mind wearing literally reddit: the watch. If you really want just the basic Tangente like that photo then I don't see what Nomos offers over Stowa though. Even the cheap Rodinas and stuff aren't so bad considering it's such a simple watch without much intricate finishing or anything like that.

I don't really have the time or the desire to get all the equipment for it, but yeah I've thought about getting into it as a little hobby. For now I just kind of read about watches and watchmaking because I think it's neat. I don't think knowing that the shape of a movement has something to do with how a watch looks really requires a whole lot of knowledge, though.

http://www.nomos-store.com/en/Watches/Model-series/Tangente

Wow, just checked. Used to think that Nomos could be found in the sub1000EUR range.
They also generally seem to have an aversion to including date indicators for some reason.

What about their current in-house movements? any good?
>>
>>10695999
Yeah I swear they used to cost that too but now that's Stowa's price range instead. I guess everyone wants muh Bauhaus now.

I don't know much about their movements. I guess it's neat that they're making their own now but it's literally the simplest possible design for a movement there is. I don't really get why they make all this noise and charge a premium for designing their own 3-hand handwinding subdial seconds movement when that style of movement has been around so long that it predates wristwatches themselves.

made me seriously kek.

The strategy is probably maintained even more easily by this aversion toward date indicators. I sometimes need date indicators more than the time itself.

Checked for cheapest Nomos with date indicator - wow'ed.

Still like the design though. Minimalist leaning bauhaus - weird cause inherently not a huge fan of bauhaus itself but what the hell.

If you want a legit bauhaus watch with mechanical movement thats affordable, check out Zeno. I own the model in the pic, still love it

Mechanical watches speed up and slow down depending on their position in regards to gravity. Tourbillons solve this problem by essentially putting the balance wheel inside a spinning gyroscope so they're never in a single position for a prolonged period.

If you don't know shit about watches get the Braun or whatever is cheapest.

If I wore a watch, I'd check it if I needed to know the time. It would be ever so slightly more convenient than whipping out my phone. Plus it would look nice. So yeah, I'd say so.
>>
>>10696286
They are more accurate if they're just sitting on a table, because a normal watch will have been adjusted for many positions, and the position of sitting on a table is likely to fall somewhere in the range of slightly fast or slightly slow. This is less of a benefit if you're wearing a watch, because that typically puts it in many positions anyways.

The El Primero movement is quite amazing as well. The story behind it's creation, loss, then resurrection brought more than a couple tears to my eyes.

Rolex watches used to use Zenith movements. The El Primero really is the finest automatic movement. At least it's the most elegant and mind boggling in it's conception.

Yes. What are you trying to say? It's mostly noticeable with subdials though, most watches will look fine with a 2824 because it'll suit anything but notice how every watch with a 7750 chrono looks exactly the same. Also notice how there are absolutely no passable mechanical speedy fakes because that watch has a very distinctive layout that doesn't match any of the widely available third party movements.

>Gramps didn't pass down his watch to you

A watch is about managing time, when you look at your watch it is a constant reminder of time. Your grandparents are dead, they had their time (heh) but now you have yours.

It's not just a fashion accessory although rich people do spend a lot on them as status symbols.

How are Orient watches? Are they just an alternative to Seiko, how would pic related compare to a Seiko 5? I'm thinking of getting one.
>>
>>10698363
They're a smaller brand that is an alternative to Seiko's lower end, they're pretty good, about equal with them. They are a subsidiary of Seiko but are pretty independent and manufacture their own separate movements, although those movements are based on old Seiko designs.

Sure. My phone's camera is pretty shit so is the lighting in my room. First, let me apologize for that.

This is the wrist shot. My wrist is pretty skinny (I haven't measure it yet lol) and this is how it sits on my wrist. It sits just right IMO.

The strap is a bit too long and I have to use the deepest slot for (for the lack of better word).

Crown shot is next.

I used to do the english teaching in Japan thing and we were told the first day of training to go out and buy a watch and practice looking at it without getting caught because it was unthinkably rude to look at your phone in the classroom, but at the same time you needed to meet certain milestones during the class.

Being made in China with a fake Danish-sounding name that is actually a subsidiary of Fossil is a pretty big red flag. Also Skagens seem to use the most delicate fragile little crystals ever, they'll get a deep gouge if you even look at them funny. It's also ugly and cheap looking and has a mystery no-name movement. It's shit.

A lot of commodities made in china don't necessarily originate there. Apple for instance simply manufactures their products there, everything else is done from California. You guys also seem to love Rodina, which are all made in China.
Outsourced manufacturing is doesn't mean shit.

>in before Apple and Rodina are shit
>>
>>10702734
I hope you know that your precious Swiss watches are halfway made in China too, though. Only 50% of the movement has to be made in Switzerland to be stamped with Swiss Made, you better believe ETA movements have their parts stamped out in a Chinese sweatshop before they get shipped off to Switzerland for just the final assembly. You can make a watch case in another country and print a dial in yet another country and be legally allowed to print SWISS MADE on that dial just because all of those parts are going to be shipped off to Switzerland to be assembled with a half-Swiss movement inside. All manufacturing is globalized now, whatever country's name happens to get stamped on a product doesn't mean shit.
>>
>>10702768

damn some proper knowledge up int his shit, i´m proud of you, and yeah you´re right, basically the design and shcematics are what makes the quality of the product, but still low skill manufacturers or cheap equipment has influence in the result quality of a product and this usually happens in big manufacturng complexes in china
