I currently own 3 bikes. A freestyle fixed-gear, a road bike, and a mountain bike.

Although I don't really ride often anymore, I'd say the type of bike you want depends upon what you're doing with it.

My freestyle fixed-gear is perfect for short rides to class or to the liquor store. They're overall fun to ride. (However, this might be due to years of practicing 'tricks')

My road bike is my go-to. It's fast, has gears and breaks(obvi), and is overall a very smooth ride. If you plan on doing a longer commute, definitely go this route. Don't buy any shitty vintage road bike though. Get something decent. (Craigslist usually has more expensive, but used, bikes that you can get for a pretty great deal)

Mountain bikes should only be for people who plan on riding trails. Don't be "that guy".

Side note:

I used to own a track bike. This is essentially a fixed-gear but made for races. It is the fastest bike I have ever used by a rather large margin. I used to hit 30mph on it without too much effort. The downside is that decent ones are expensive. However, they look awesome, are incredibly easy to maintain, and you'll have buff legs due to the lack of gears.
>>
>>10685067

yep
>>
>>10685074
>you'll have buff legs due to the lack of gears.
This unless you have a history of knee problems, that's what made me stop
>>
>>10684711

you mean the model notorious for having the engine block fall out of the frame?

geo prizm is the ultimate economy car. there's a state senator from ohio who has 500,000 miles on his prism, 480,000 of which were on the same engine. why he replaced the engine at all baffles me. 480,000 miles is fantastic, and replacing the engine probably cost 3x what the car was worth.

in any case, geo prizm: cheap, reliable, easy to service, and will keep on chugging for hundreds of thousands of miles. just like your waifu.

Fixies are really only for confident people who want to do the tricks. singld speeds are so much better for the average person wanting a bike. Stop being a fucking sheep

>not riding a tt bike all day
>>
>>10685415
i think youre wrong, no other bike even gets close to the feeling of riding a fixxed gear, you trully become one with the bike when you clip in, all bikes are fun but fixed gears are special, and they are a lot easier to maintain that any other bike, trust me, if it has gears and brakes youre gonna have problems with it. dont even get me started on suspension. when i used to race DH the bike had to get serviced basically after every race to prevent mechanical defects, with a trackbike you just have to lube the chain and true the wheels every once in a while, and theyre also extremley aestheticaly pleasing.
>>
>>10685736
this is the cylcling equalient to driving a hummer in an urban area
>>
>>10684685

riding is cooler than not riding, so any bike, really.
>>
>>10684685
>what types of bikes are /fa/ ?
I suggest you begin by getting a feel for bike geometry. All types of bikes can be effay.

the bike you posted lookes really really cheap component wise and geometry wise it looks shit

>>10685063
>>10685396
These bikes looks very cheap component wise but their geometry looks good.
Protip is to look for the headtube height and angle and wheelbase ( the other two bikes have their wheels closer to the frame)

>Yes Im buying a bike soon
I suggest you look for a fixed gear bike, you can find cheap converted old ten speed fixed gear bikes. Dont buy >>10686144 new noname brand "fixie" bikes. They are way overpriced with noname components. Dont be afraid of buying second hand, its more fa anyways.

Fixed gear will give you a really tight feel and conection to your bike and give you the right pedaling discipline. Its also cheaper than gears, less problems and lighter. You can later upgrade to a geared roadbike/mtb
>>
>>10686144
Meh I beg to differ, I feel as if any one who wants to get a fixie is a sheep. Not having brakes is just asking to get hit by a car. I have a SL3 and I love it to death desu
>>
>>10686800
Who said anything about not having brakes? I ride a fixed for commuting and its a goat cardio workout.
>>
>>10686800
most people who dont ride fixed gears think like this

>>10686824
most people that do ride fixed gears think like this
>>
>>10686800
Actually I just noticed the guy you quoted recommended not having gears and brakes. Although I do, and still enjoy taking my fixed gear out on the road. I also don't smash the shit out of my road frame and wheels trying to do stupid stunts on it. Learning to ride it was a fun kind of scary and I'd recommend trying it to anyone into riding bikes. (For reference my cycling background was in BMX)
