that's a pomade. You can tell because pomade gives hair shiny appearance. Wax can give hair a sheen like pomade but it is much more nuanced.
also, he's using a fuck ton of pomade so take that into consideration.

make sure to apply the pomade while your hair is damp (not dripping) to help make the pomade easier to apply.
start by combing the sides of your hair back. Use a wide tooth comb on the top making sure there is a sufficient amount of pomade in that area to prevent your hair from completely falling down.

i have p similar facial structure and hair to jake, so i think i can easily rock this. in fact, it's really similar to my safest, best haircut, bar not clipping the sides.
