This almost bald spot here is new, hair there always used to be fine but the last week or two I've noticed nothing grows here. It based any scruff or beard I have look terrible. What happened?

It's a product of (1) a bad haircut growing out awkwardly and probably inconsistently and (2) your hair being thicker or greasy or something, making it clump together and accentuate the spot. It's not really something you should be even concerned about in the slightest.
My guess is that it's just a reflection that a small patch of your hair is growing faster than the rest of it.
