Yes it is.

99% of modern punk music is garbage bands trying to sound like the punk bands that were actually good.

And before someone mentions them, Joyce Manor/The Menzingers/etc. aren't punk.

folk punk died this year but was relevant for the entirety of the 2000s.

punk isn't about the sound, it's about the feeling.

agreed, but it is false to act like punk is entirely dead. It's incredibly hard to find, but there are strains of music that are entirely punk in ethos still remaining. It's getting muddled with some sjw stuff that goes a little too far for me personally but that's just life in 2015. To put it simply, I have no problem with 99% of the topics said "sjw'' bands deal with, but they ignore the bigger picture and ultimate reason the punk ethos exists.

It's a tough time to be punk but it isn't all over.

I strongly advise seeking literature and writing in general if you're in pursuit of a modern day media expressing punk ideas.

It's different. Punk used to focus on global injustices and cultural problems. Now a lot of punk is getting stuck in being all about smaller, individual issues, without putting out a bigger message.
>>
My favorite site for punk shirts is punkstuff.com
They have some really cool logos
And I dunno if they're still active but fullbreach77 was cool too
>>
>>10629492
idk what to tell you man, I looked for one online but the amount of people who told me that sizing one was really hard put me off, went looking in shops in town (I live in Liverpool, England) and it took me a week of looking to find one that fit me perfectly, and even then it was only because the dude said they might have some in the back. It probably won't take you that long to find one depending on where you live, especially if you're looking for a blue one, they come by the dozen.

My main concerns about that bleaching thing is that it's from Cowboy Bebop which is a weeb thing and i'm not so sure about how comfortable I am being approached by neckbeards - and also the idea of bleaching a brand new jacket, i'm gonna try it out on some old jeans first though
>>
>>10629518
for the record I'm really into meta punk that criticizes the movement and its followers, but that's only a part. A lot of bands/musicians these days really, really, really fall short in delivering a message that makes them worth calling punk.
>>
>>10629524
I wish man, I live in a really suburban community where theres only like two thriftshops and theyre literally where nothing good goes.

I'd definitely practice bleaching on a different item first.
as for being approached by neckbeards, just look so punk they dont want to approach you

It was like that in the Crass 80s, sure
But punk was always a self-centered drug fueled circle jerk for latchkey kids and weirdos. The way they described it in the beginning of Don't Kill Me was so blatantly homosexual (as in, kids going into bath houses with tubs of KY jelly everywhere, trying out hardcore gay sex and then eventually forming the foundations of punk [seriously read the book that's exactly what happened]) that I can barely even take the early stuff seriously
Anybody who thinks that the clash and sex pistols were anything other than posers is stuck in a bubble.
>>
>>10629565
Sure, I don't disagree. Punk has had a lot of dead phases, and punk is almost exclusively shit. You just have to find the pockets that work for you.

also the clash/sex pistols comment wasn't even necessary. no one relevant to this conversation would disagree.

Legs McNeil
It's the definitive punk book
There are a ton of old zines that have been reprinted in anthologies
We Got Power, LA hardcore fanzine from the 80s
Boys Own, punk/ska/acid house/casual culture zine from the UK
I think there an anthology of Sniffin Glue that you can get on Amazon
Touch N Go, probably the most prominent punk zine from the 70s
Definitely get Razorcake, man. Fucking phenomenal punk magazine from California. And Chips&Beer

Everybody booked MDC in the 80s those guys would play anywhere.
>>
It bothers me to see kids wearing all of this stereotypical punk clothing with tumblr leggings and shit. I live in a neighborhood which, until recently, was pretty punk. It's about the attitude and the struggle to work toward what you can. Most of my punk friends just wear denim jackets and skinnies. Studs, tons of patches, and crazy hair just make you look tryhard in any real scene.

>>10629518
Is there anything wrong with punk that focuses on smaller issues? If anything, choosing to focus on global issues is the least effective way to see change. You gotta act locally. Anyway, most of the classic punk bands were framing broader social, economic, and political problems within a local context (Guns of Brixton, California Ãœber Alles, etc).

I've always loved Ted Leo because he's never stopped singing about relevant issues. He's pushing fifty but unlike a lot of old punk rockers, he's still out there writing songs about current issues ranging from politics to eating disorders to race relations. There are still plenty of good artists keeping the attitude alive, but the playing field is changing. The classic simplistic punk style of the '70's is gonna sound dated. The best current bands are the ones that have embraced new musical styles and worked within them to put out something that's modern and relevant, but still meaningful.

A guy in his 50s with dyed hair, a ripped shirt, and fat-stretched tattoos? Pathetic. Punk is naturally a kids' genre, you can't be punk after years of paying mortgages and climbing the corporate ladder. You can enjoy the music, but don't try to look like a punk.

I saw the UK Subs once and the 70 year old singer was alright only because he dressed like a 70 year old and didn't try to act young and hard, he seemed like a kind old English gentleman when not singing.
>>

punk is an attitude and a set of beliefs

it just happened to be pioneered by a disillusioned youth

who are you to say that the old dude in the audience has paid mortgages for years and climbed the corporate ladder
perhaps he's been sticking it to the man and doing his own thing his whole life
maybe he's the living embodiment of a punk lifestyle and he's still living it
you can call him a washout of society but don't call him pathetic for staying true to himself

I had a gfd who tried to dress punk and was really fucking dumb its not that worth it

If youre craving for attention try something new something yours. Punk has been done time and again so besides unoriginal you'll be just another one.

By another one I mean part of the same system you criticize, so unless youre a very superficial girl dont do it.

By the same logic if you really want to go that path idk dye your hair in flashy colors buy a leather jacket and there you go youll be punk withou forcing it.

Who the fuck even says punk is dead. It has fallen out of mainstream attention now that there are other trendy does styles to talk about but it still exists as a community and a philosophy. Growing up I was always annoyed at people who thought being punk was only about wearing the uniform and fighting. Punk has always been a labor centric ideology rooted on DIY and a fight against injustice. You just gotta put some love and thought and learn the history.

Punk as a subculture still exists, yes, but in popular opinion its significance has been diluted to a fashion choice. After all, to dress "punk", you don't even have to think for yourself; all you need is a desire for attention.

Personally, I dislike the idea of conforming to an ideology that is reactionary towards -- and therefore, based on -- the mainstream. However, I like exploring punk-inspired fits, like pic related

Gas is more expensive and the cover charge hasn't gonna up

And now they're not even getting fucked over by labels; instead they're fending for themselves and depending in donations to get by
All power to em. I've booked DIY bands and fucking love the enthusiasm; it's just hard to justify the practicality

I think I saw CS on that tour, mind blowing. They really preluded that whole wave of new "real hardcore punk" bands imo. Before that, that type of bands were few and far between with youth crew being the scene standard. Now, everybody and their mother has a "freak" band.

I stilll love stuff like Leather Daddy, Lumpy and the Dumpers or Gutter Gods over any clean cut youth crew band though.

No it's not, it's exactly as hard. If anything, it's easier. Booking a tour and staying in touch with promotors overseas is much much easier. Booking a space and advertising your show is much much easier. Running a label and actually selling stuff is far easier. All because of the internet. I haven't seen a physical flyer in years.

Sure, prices have gone up but the possibilities are far greater in 2015 then they were in 1985.

Don't you have a Harm's Way test press to snipe on ebay? Maybe get rid of those old metalcore shirt just so you can cop that sweet vintage Life Of Agony hockey jersey?

I agree, but there's a pretty massive amount of hype and support that goes into the more underground communities. Most shows I go to with a touring band clear around $200 for gas/etc because everyone who goes is down to throw down $7-20.
What's really crazy though is how under the radar some of these more popular bands can fly, but I would guess that's because most "legit punk" bands don't dress like the clowns people keep posting here
>>
>>10631391
I've seen enough tours fall apart after the first show, man
But I guess it was happening then too

It'd be cool if more towns had all age venues. They probably ban hardcore shows there anyway
Lol I know someone who got signed to Rise Records and they made less money (ie none) than the Pantera ripoff band that plays for weekend warriors in biker bars. That shit can actually pay the bills, man

I can't comprehend how different the US is from mainland Europe. Everything is all ages here and most venues allow hardcore or punk as long as you pay up and don't wreck shit. Plus there's government funded youth houses to play.

Yeah basically you have to find a bar that's cool enough to let you run a show or do it at a VFW/KoC/FOE/CWV/Elk's Lodge and pay them. Making money can be tough if the venue fucks you over on age restrictions
