Leather is leather is leather is leather, regardless of what it's being fashioned into. Leather needs to be conditioned if you want it to last a long time. I think people tend to neglect sneakers because they typically can't be resoled, and the sole will in all likelihood give out before the leather does.
IMO if you're paying $500+ for a pair of shoes, you'd better fucking take care of them. That's just me, though. I also happen to think that cracked and rotted leather doesn't look very good.
