everyone seems to love this movie because they "hate fashion" but shop at the mall for clothing to wear to fit into their respected friend circles, be it geeky t-shirts from the big bang theory or a nirvana shirt to wear pair with a flannel tied at the waist with jean shorts

I feel like people who knew how I used to dress will think I'm trying to be something I'm not, but I just changed. and I dressed like shit before, because that was a comfort zone and just what I was used to.

Avoid a plain white shirt with black pants, unless you're also wearing a tie to add some colour. (Not a black tie, obviously.)
Otherwise, white and light blue shirts are the basics you can wear with pretty much anything. If you wear ties, as a general rule go for a plain tie with a striped shirt or a striped tie with a plain shirt. But also just look at yourself in a mirror and see if it looks good. If it does, you're fine.
Check pattern shirts can look a bit less formal, which may or may not be what you're looking for.
When bra straps are clearly exposed in the exterior (for example, due to wearing a bra under a tank or spaghetti strap top, and the shirt straps don't cover the bra straps unless they're set exactly on top), is that a technical error — akin to wearing white socks with black shoes, or tucking your shirt into your underwear?
