Personally I was just saying that Lisa, Christie, Hitomi, Brad Wong, Kokoro, and Eliot (DOA3 and DOA4) were better overall additions than Marie Ross, Alpha, Honoka and Mila (various releases of DOA5). Even Rachel, the strongest DOA5 addition IMO, is an adaptation of Nicole from DOA4 and a character from 2003 Ninja Gaiden.
On the other hand, I think the Virtua Fighter cameos, so far, have been very adequate. I wouldn't mind seeing more of those.
But these are all appraisals based on my own personal enjoyment. Unlike the VF cameos, it's not like Naotora was in another 3D fighters before this.

But gameplay-wise, Itagaki made sure that DOA4 was unplayable at a competitive level, not unlike Smash Brawl. See, in DOA3.1, a game very dear to the competitive community, grapplers were top tier. But Itagaki didn't like that. In his mind, ninjas should be stronger and grapplers shouldn't be able to beat them. So he just fucked the balance in 4. There's an interview out there where he just explicitly said that.
Plus, he made it so that you could counter of everything, making ground combos riskier and fishing with counters more braindead. DOA5U and onwards reduced the guessing game aspect, making moving on the offense more guaranteed and not just a crapshoot.
Take that discussion to /v/ guys....

I see your point--for a non-tournament player it's less of an issue, but still a valid one. That being said, that doesn't reflect on the actual personalities being introduced (or borrowed from other franchises), but reflect mechanical deficiencies.
On the other hand, I completely forgot about Nyotengu, easily one of the better DOA5 new characters. Still not as good as Hitomi, Christie or Lisa but still a strong addition. So they did something right without him, at least. I'm probably a little biased by the fact that DOA5 has the terrible Soulcalibur V-style story mode as oppose to the safe, boring, but at least not awful story modes of the previous games.
In any case, Itagaki is equally responsible for DOA3 (and its updated form) and DOA4--in my own limited experience, I'd say DOA3.1 was far better than any incarnation of DOA5 but, again, it's not my area.
All thanks to the overwhelming positive reception the new models for the girls had back in 11/12 is the reason why even today the surplus of coming dlc hasn't stopped.

Fun fact: before the addition of diminutive Honoka (150 cm--Ayane, who was the shortest DOA girl for many games, is 157 cm tall), Rachel was the bustiest DOA fighter. At 96 cm, she narrowly edged out Tina (95 cm), Ayane, Christie and Nyotengu (all 93 cm).
Of course, she's also a lot taller than Honoka at 172 cm, and further taller by the heels in her default costume and her tall hairstyle (probably why in Ninja Gaiden, she looks as tall as Hayabusa in the scenes they share). Personally I think she looks a lot more proportional than Honoka.
