Hello /diy/, almost total newbie here. Can anyone give me some hints to disassemble safely a microwave oven? I would like to salvage some components. Feel free to insult, though.
Pic unrelated.

unplug. wait an hour. check capacitor voltage.

if the oven was made in the last 25 or so years the capacitor has an internal discharge resistor.

Avoid destroying the magnetron with a hammer, if urges are uncontrollable, at least try to avoid the pink stuff around the emitter on the boxy thing that the wires lead to.

are you the scrub that pulled our broken one out of the trash?

There is nothing special about dissasembling a microwave oven. I took apart a ton of them and all you have to do is short the capacitor with a screwdriver. and avoid doing any damage to the pink ceramic knob on the microwave emitter. The dust partivles that come from that thing are highly toxic and dangerous. But than again, if you dont hit it with something there is nothing to be afraid of.

There is nothing to worry about other than the capacitor. There is no radioactive shit or all that other stuff people seem to freak out about when disposing of a microwave. If you see something that looks like a small slightly elongated soda can, take a screw driver (and maybe use welding gloves just to be safe) and short out the two terminals on top. If it sparks, you may have just saved your own life. If there is no sparks dont worry, that just means the cap wasnt charged, just make sure the terminals are shorted together. People will tell you that you need a resistor, which ideally yes you would use one, but a clean screwdriver will work fine.

>all those comments about cancer
I bet all of them think cell phones cause cancer as well
all a magnetron is going to do is cook you to death, other than give you cancer and berylliosis if you fuck around with the pink ceramic thingy
