Hey /diy/ I've only ever hear of one ship building school where I live, but I was wondering what kind of resources would be needed to make a ship the size of pic related.

I know there's some places that sell tall ships, but none the size of a spanish galleon, and if they are that size they are powered by a motor instead of having sails. Which I think would be best.

I was just wondering if you guys could tell me what you know about wooden shipbuilding.
Thanks.

If you have to ask, you don't have them. Unless you have an entire forest of old-growth hardwood just lying around, you won't even get started. What's your budget and timeframe?

I think you may be misunderstanding the size of a real galleon.

They are BIG.

We are talking as large and some times far larger than a small apartment building.

The man didn't ask we could tell him whether or not he could build it, he asked us to tell him about it. Since you know the same as I do about wooden ship building ( Read: Jackshit ) this is one of those times you should have shut the fuck up.

This is /diy/.

If he has no intention of building it and can not plausibly do it himself, it's not doing it yourself, it's a worksafe request. Without a budget or timeframe, it doesn't belong here.

>Since you know the same as I do about wooden ship building
Speak for yourself. You really do need an entire forest, and it has to be old-growth. Do you know why? I do.

Have you ever seen a reproduction IRL? Colonial ships like that really weren't very big.
I mean,,, it's gonna take a bunch of trees, yea--but the unfamiliar shape makes judging the size difficult.
>I know there's some places that sell tall ships, but none the size of a spanish galleon, and if they are that size they are powered by a motor instead of having sails. Which I think would be best.
Nobody really wants accurate reproductions to -use- because they didn't really sail that well. Compared to modern {wooden} boat designs they were very stubby, heavy and slow, and they sailed and handled very poorly.

Boredom:
Go forth and consult the Google for "Haiti boad builders", pic related.
These guise have one hatchet, one saw and one chisel (sometimes they have to make a mallet first, just to use the chisel) and some kite string to measure with--and can build boats that are,,,, well,,, not *great*, but damned impressive nonetheless. It makes you wonder what they could do with some *real* tools and materials....

This really hits the nail on the head. It's not just the wood. You need a functioning shipyard, the master builders and all the specialist craftsmen to service it. Then in addition to the wood, you need tons of rope, sails, pitch for sealing, metal fittings, etc. Fuck, you had whole workshops of specialists making stuff like rope, nails, railings and trim, etc. And that doesn't even get into making the barrels, furniture or cannons you will need if you want to actually fit the ship for use.

These are multimillion dollar projects that are usually done by specialists on a case by case basis in the US. There was a topsail schooner building in Charleston SC when I visited a few years back, and of course the Brig Niagara was rebuilt from the keel up in the 1980s-- she gets regular overhauls in Cleveland. A popular alternative is to build a steel hull, as in the reconstruction of the HMS Detroit/ Oliver Hazard Perry, with wooden upper works and spars.
