Have a look at the picture. Let's say the red box is a button. What kind of mechanism would be needed to push the two blue boxes outward when the button is pushed down, but allow it to retract to its original position once pressure was removed?

Here's a better explanation
Imagine this container is filled with fluid
when the button is compressed the two blue boxes are forced outwards till they hit the flange
When you release pressure the button the spring causes them to retract.
This will require you to press pretty hard though to overcome the spring.

How far do the the sides need to move?
Can their shape be modified can the top (button) shape be modified?
How deep can the top travel between the sides? Can it extend past the bottom of the sides?

And if you really need to know look at shit that already exists and apply it to what you are doing don't try to reinvent the wheel
Ever see a cantilever tool box? The kind with trays on top that stay in the same attitude in relation the the base? If you turn that mechanism upside down it does exactly what you want
