Its was SSB as per the switch on the right.
I predict OP was Aussie. If you bought these they may be ok for talking shit with people but most serious road users etc use UHF CB these days.

Just a heads up, Realistic was Radio Shack's house brand. Some of their stuff was good, some of it was shit. Its been discontinued for 15-20 years so none of that stuff is anywhere near new.
