mineral oil

the thing is, your son is going to bite it, it is going to happen, guaranteed, so ideally don't put anything on it

Use chemically treated pallets.

Most wood finishes are said to be non toxic once cured. You want something that won't flake easily. This really is something you should be using Google for, because it's specialized and involves safety.

I've heard boiled linseed oil contains heavy metals in it, if so I wouldn't use that. Also, it's not durable.

There are several finishes used for food contact, bees wax, mineral oil, but most would come off and need to be re applied eventuality. I say food contact because it'll probably end up in your kids mouth at some point.

I would look at water based polyacrylics. There are quite a few. Find an sds or contact the manufacturer. If those don't pass the test look into shellac. If that doesn't work just keep looking. I wouldn't use lacquer. Polyurethane might be ok, it's safe to use on floors kids crawl around on.

I'd use maple and beeswax.

Shellac. Not the most durable, but you can touch it up easy.

possibly flax oil or a nut (walnut) oil, as long as the kid isn't allergic to nuts

Look at "osmo" branded stuff they do food safe finishes. Either that or take your pick of pure lemon oil or camelia oil or any other natural or fruit oil will work.

Why is this so funny to me. Thankyou.

I'm with this anon, just sand it down really well and you should be fine, all the wooden toys my dad made for me or got me were all unfinished
>>
yeah OP I think you should keep it unfinished. i bought one for my nephew from a nice toy shop and it was well made but didn't have any finish on it. seems most of them don't.

also, you can always make it unfinished and then buy some poster paints or something and the two of you can paint it

I think I'll try both, unfinished and with bee wax, I really like the look wood takes when I apply wood finish

If OP exposes his son to nut oil as an infant he'll likely never develop nut allergy in the first place.

Expose "nuts" to his son?

>>959431
Maybe linnseed oil?

Bullshit pseudoscience. I bet you think vaccines cause autism too, right?
