Thread thickness is dependent on the needle, not the machine. So get a needle that can handle thicker thread.

I've had it happen, its not as bad as you think. I do carpentry too and catching your finger with a hammer is worse. You bleed a little but after that its just a cut. A hammered finger hurts for days.
