Im starting an aquaponics set up and had a question about lightbulbs.
I have this clipon light fixture that recommends a 40 watt incandescent or 13 watt cfl.
CFL bulbs run cooler right? Is anything stopping me from using a 40 watt cfl?

Yes. Light spectrum. CFLs do not do the broad spectrum of colour that incandescents do, meaning your biomass is getting less light for no good reason. Unless you are going full retard on LEDs and such, incandescent evey time.

Can you elaborate? I've never heard anyone suggest using incandescent lamps for growing. It's all led, cfl or metal halides
You just have to make sure you hit all your required frequencies. Obviously the most important frequencies you gotta about are chlorophyll a (429nm or 662nm) and chlorophyll b (453nm or 642nm). Then there are additional frequencies you have to worry about depending on the plant. LED setups are the best when you know exactly what plant you're using to maximize efficiency.
seems plants just need blue and red and a bit of IR. there's a local warehouse growing tomatoes and such, and that's how they save money, by not producing un-needed wavelengths.
