Req for some thoughts on a design or design features for a wooden 3-family apartment mailbox.

I just moved into one and the current mailbox is 3 shitty plastic bins on the front porch with stickers for tenant labels. Need to upgrade that shit.

I'm also interested in incorporating a false bottom or something as a hide-a-key.

Fun fact: in the USA, mailboxes for postal service use must meet a set of guidelines issued and maintained by the Postmaster General.
If you want to make your own mailbox, there is some rules about that:

Maybe just use combination locks, and you and your neighbors can just keep spare key in the respected boxes. That way no one can find the fake bottom and break in to your apartment.
>>
maybe a metal ammo or gas can, if you can find one large enough

cut a slot for mail, get a lock kit, and mount it to something secure with bolts

You are absolutely right, except that this only applies for mail which is delivered by truck. I think walking mail delivery is exempt, which is why I want to get more creative.

My current mailbox (pic related) definitely don't comply with that.

Doesn't sound like it.

>>If you are attaching the box to your house, make sure the postal carrier can reach it easily from your sidewalk, steps, or porch.

The one in your first pic is perfectly fine, we have a 6-slot version of it in our building.
