I won a bunch of starrett 657 mag bases and all the buttons move but they're pretty difficult to push. Any ideas on how to free them up? There was a thread on homeshopmachinist about them and they say not to pop the front off or else they won't be as strong as before. Should I just try dripping acetone or carb cleaner down the sides of the button?

I'd try some contact cleaner. The stuff people use to clean the switches and dials in old electronics. Its designed to evaporte cleanly.

they're just hard to push, unless its binding up(doubt it, starrett are p.gud), you just need to get some fucking grip strength.
alternatively, i'm sure someone will give you a pretty peny for those older bases, you can then go buy a more modern version with the flippy switch, much easier to turn on/off.

who? its just a pair of magnets, don't drop them or weld them and they'll last forever.

I flush mine with WD-40 (that's all it's good for besides cutting lube for aluminum) then give them a few drops of oil.
