I thought about it, never got around to it. It's too much hassle desu, you can get a nice metal case for $25. You wouldn't save any money building it yourself unless you had scrap metal laying around.

I used nylon spacers and rubber o-rings for stand offs. That one is a raspi3.

Here another I did for the raspi2. This one was tight fitting so I just lined the metal case with tape to keep it from shorting.

It's my dream to make one of these. My current pc is way to big to fit into something like this though. I was thinking if I ever get around to making a media center I'd try something like this

I have been thinking of building a custom case. I've taken some inspiration from old cars.
I'm using an old computer case as a base and I'm thinking of using MDF since I have plenty of that lying around.

I already have a panel of sheet steel, withe the corners conveniently squared off at clean angles to use as a base. I've wire brushed it down, to knock off the rust and paint. I plan on spraying it down with flexseal/plastidip to to somewhat insulate the case, and reduce any kind of vibration noise.

I should note that this layout is still just a WIP. The PSU and Mobo are old hardware I had laying around, but I figured they are mostly universal in their size and mounting holes. I still haven't settled on a GPU, so I found some measurements for a really fucking massive GPU, and will likely scale it down from there. The SSD and HDD slots are pretty much the only components I have specific measurements for, untill I order my new hardware, and/or disassemble my current PC.

>>1007503
Wouldn't the video card be perpendicular over the mobo?
>>
>>1007506
You can get an extension ribbon/mount for it. Some cases even include it due to its own design and form. Silverstone has one of those, IIRC, but only for the smaller mobos.

Now if those mobo trays didn't cost so much I would be getting into this project and make a slimmer neater case, but I'd need to get stuff done in a fab shop for the stuff I'm thinking of. Maybe some other time when I have money and time to sink.

Nice. While I can only dream of eventually purchasing keycaps and an aperture stencil for my standard issue cherry keyboard, I did however some research on MiniITX hardware for a different project. Maybe that form factor suits your needs?
They are a cost efficient solution too if you go for a thin client/terminal/media center use case.

Not worth my time, maybe some day when I can just design it and 3D print it for cheaper.

For parts that aren't complex shapes I'd rather get the majority laser cut. 3D printing is a catch-22 when it comes to big projects, trust me it's gonna suck ass if you print the whole damn thing.

But if you imply you already have access to a 3D printer, that's a moot point anyway. For starters, printing something enormous like a desktop case via shapeways is a sure way to waste a lot of money.

Got some cyberpunk/scifi thing going on. It may look a bit edgy, but in a nice way, like it.
I would drop the meme coloring on the coolant tough if it was added, heard that fucks with the pump in most cases.

Also how's the cost of the extruded profiles for, lets say, a small server rack?
Makes me consider upon seeing this.

Do you plan on putting in acrylic plates for cover or will it be flopping in the breeze?
Just askin'.
>>
>>1008022
Ever side will be closed with a snug fitted Aluminium plate, within the border of the frame. So you still can see the frame. And on the side you see right now there will be an acrylic window.
Yeah the coolant can fuck up. But I had distilled water with some anti-corrosives stuff before. Well my GPU block looks shit now ... with that new coolant I see no problems and I got a fine filter in the loop that helped me before.

For the profile cost. I brought it here:
http://www.motedis.com/shop/
It is expensive and I can tell you right away don't build a PC case or server rack with that stuff.

Ist es Deutschland hier?

Naja.. ya right with the pricing.
Even the chinks can't get it down to a reasonable level after quickly checking it out on ali.
Still tough, I might build something similar one day.
Maybe when I'm building a CNC, I can order a few more for a neat case.
On the other hand, I really like the idea of using a decommissioned ammo box like pic related.
Can even be built with some nifty ee-type instruments thinking about it. For starters an integrated controllable PSU would be über useful. Top it off with an internal battery pack and voilà.

You know what, I'm going with that rather.

I'e bilt some acrylic case mini-ITX computers for my relatives, good airflow, easy to dissasemble. Oldest is 5 years, and doing ok.

I'm renovating apartment I bought, and I'm thinking of building my own computer desk, and housing pc in top drawer.

Problem is - I could not find a definitive answer about EMI shielding and grounding. Your usual metal case has those problem covered. My acrylic ones are grounded only by psu, and even their IO backplates were cut in acrylic. Am I doing it horribly wrong, or it does not matter?
Pic is made in paint on a win2000 machine. No regrets.
>>
>>1008035
As long as your psu is grounded thru the mains cable you should be fine, but if you want to be sure you could just cut the motherboard tray out of an old case and have a wire connecting it to the psu case.

This is just my understanding of how it works, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
>>
>>1008041
That's a good idea, also plotting standoff holes in acrylic is a pain, so it will makje it easier. I had one junk pc case laying around, but recently some guy needed one so i sold it. Maybe i'll find another in meantime.
There was another forum thread somewhere where they would go on about how EMI radiation is bad for your health, saying shit like "it's ok as long as you do not have acrylic case/window".
I would put some metallic mesh behind the window but it would look like crap and defeat whole purpose of having a window. :(
Won't reinvent previously done cases, though, my relatives probably allready have brain/ass cancer, why bother...

>>
>>1008058
Everything is and causes cancer these days. There are people who use wall mounted PCs, open cases and some even no case at all, if your worried about EMI from an acrylic PC then you should also wrap your phone in tinfoil before making a call, afterall cellphones are basically computers in a plastic case that you intentionally put right against your brain.

You and anyone you made an acrylic PC for are fine, if someone gets cancer you can blame it on the radioactivity of bananas.
>>
>>1008089
I never got the whole cancer bullshit surrounding EMR.
Gives me the kekkles everytime someone talks about "how harmful" it is in public.
Best of all, those retards shielding their phone while in-call with some snake-oil cover. Retards don't and won't know about umts.
>>
>>1008073
You would still want to use common materials wherever you can. There's no point in printing up flat sides, when you can just buy sheets of plastic for cheaper than the filliment/energy cost, and have a lot less cleanup work.

That's how you know someone has no fucking clue what they're building.

They're almost certainly RAIDed, which means you need the version that hasn't had its firmware crippled.

That's a media PC, m8. it doesn't need super expensive MLGPRO harddrives, just storage space.
>>
>>1008737
>>1008506

Reds are more expensive than blues and blacks of the same batch though.

If they're raided, it makes sense, but outside of that, it's useless

I use a 2TB one as a backup drive for my computers.

I did once. Looked pretty shit but it worked pretty well. Drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom for my sli gtx 670s to hang better airflow.

Also added a fan on the side above the cards.

Almost 15 degrees c drop in temp

honestly, that is probably a far better solution than just building an emulator box. if you set it up as pocket media PC, you can still run all the emulators, and also do internet and other media shit easily.

I designed one a while ago because I wasn't a fan of the styling of my current case, it's one of those ones that looks like Optimus Prime's dick.
I modelled it in CAD and sourced all the materials, and then put it on hold until I could get a real source of income, as it turned out that it would be too expensive for what I have now.

Here's a shitty render of it, it's retardedly large because I didn't want any visible vents on the front top or sides, so they're all on the back and there's a load of fans and empty room inside to make sure there's enough airflow.
>>
>>1013519
That's mothafucking cool. I wanted to build a wood/woodlike case too. But now that I read and saw this whole magnificent and astonishing thread I want to build a micro-woodlike PC.

I guess redid Andy because you'll have trobs filling up 2 Tb already, no point in 4 available when you'll never get it and you can get the increased read from mirroring...

The fast drive for the is and programs is the Samsung ssd. Did all you geniuses not see that? The hdd is for movies/music/documents either way.

Nah, if you're doing video editing, you need lots of storage and extreme linear read/linear write.

Use the SSD for scratch, and the RAID for rendering.

Guess you've never seen a PC that does actual work before.
