I think it's becoming harder and harder to divorce innocent size scenarios from the giantess/size fetish in general, and that's just due to exposure in general. As more and more people become aware of our fetish's existence, it will be more natural to look at what was once an innocent quirky sci-fi trope and conflate it with the fetish. What's interesting about that is that it absolutely is non-sexual, provided you don't have any knowledge of the fetish. Much in the same way that people without foot fetishes can recognize the fetish appeal of feet, so it goes for giantess/size scenarios. Pretty soon (if not already), size-changing scenarios will likely be viewed as innately fetishy/sexual, regardless of whether any sexual content is present, and for people without the fetish, the mere knowledge of its existence is enough to put people off.
Just the other day, I was talking with a friend as we were (hate-)watching the Ubisoft E3 conference with Aisha Tyler standing next to this shorter guy, and he mentioned the fetish in a somewhat negative light. Effectively, he said, ">you will never be THAT weird, and be one of _those_ guys who's into that giantess crushing shit" (the word "those" in contempt-laden italics). So yeah, once the association is made, the scenarios take on a new meaning, and that's bound to make people recoil in revulsion.
I say all of that to say that giantess/size is probably going to be considered inherently sexual, or at the very least perverted. No matter how much some of us want to hold out and maintain that this stuff isn't sexual in nature, I think those people are just in denial--the last holdouts against changing perception. In only the last few years the giantess fetish has been featured in articles on a number of popular websites (Playboy, The Young Turks, Pornhub, etc), it has made it to the front page of Reddit/Imgur a few times, it has been covered on a number of different television programs from all over the world, and so on. Any one of these has a signfiicantly larger impact on the wider world's awareness of us than a small, private convention. A single (positive!) article was written about Sizecon on Vocativ, but it doesn't appear to have generated much buzz.
We've had a fair bit of coverage, but we're still fairly niche. But we're certainly increasing in popularity (see Google Trends).

I doubt size will ever take off. I mean BDSM is probably the most well known 'mainstream' fetish out there, and it still isn't a popular subject of discussion. The most they get are like allusions to the fetish in music videos, movies, comedy, etc. Which I doubt would really effect GTS stuff that much, as it already has lots of incidental occurrence in non-fetish material.
I mean it's not like anything big budget is going to be done specifically for the GTS fetish, there's already a dozen fetishes ahead of us in line and numbers to get to first. It's hard to judge how much of an effect this sort of thing really has. For example, the producers of Zootopia were pretty open about advertising the movie to furries. Hell, that movie even has a giantess anthro scene, which I've seen commented on by people OUTSIDE the giantess fetish. And it's a kids movie.
Size material has a long, right history in film/tv/advertising. I could see it taking a bit of a dip if the size fetishes were to really get out there, but I can't imagine they'd properly go away. And in such a case, the lack of size material in tv/movies/ads would probably be offset somewhat by material coming in elsewhere from the increased popularity.
I think it's a real concern, but it's also really difficult to quantify.

Every other fetish thread I've seen on 4chan as a whole stands alone pretty well but every time a giantess thread rolls around a majority of the images involve themes of crushing/fucking/devouring people or towns and I'm not sure if giantess is really supposed to be the main focus over violence. I understand that something needs to be included to give a sense of scale(because really, there's no way to actually tell if someone is large or not unless there's something else in the picture with them) but that sense of scale always seems to involve death. I don't really see the difference between that and simply giving some girl a death ray and showing her vaporizing a city.
