Except that's never been what Rumiko Takahashi intended Ranma's character to be about. Ever. His entire goal has never been anything but getting rid of his curse.
Another common trait of Ranma characters is an extreme stubborness and complete unwillingness to accept what they have. Shampoo will never accept Mousse as a boyfriend. Kuno will never see both versions of Ranma as the same person.
So Ranma accepting being female and getting pregnant is as extreme a polar opposite to Ranma's character as one can possibly get.

To be fair the author made them that way to always maintain said status quo because it was the premise of the show, this never ending tug of war for Ranma and the impossible honor commitments. I'm torn because I like ooc/cd stories but if you remove what makes the character "them" like if you turn cocky, arrogant male Ranma into a submissive housewife Ranma-chan then you could in theory just make an original character. But I get that it's the fantasy of it, imagining a certain character because you happen to like him or her etc.

It's a tricky thing to handle when you have a series that depends so much on a certain status quo. Change it, and it you risk things change for the worse and people lose interest because it's no longer about what they were interested in. (See the old TV series Moonlighting as a prime example of this.)
So the status quo isn't necessarily a bad thing if its what the series revolves around. On the other hand, it can obviously drive fans nuts seeing things continually move along without any perceived sense of progress toward resolution and so they bring out what they'd like to see through fanart or fanfic.

The show was built on everything staying the same, with some wackiness thrown in or filler, and people decided to take the characters and extrapolate (elaborate?) on them, sometimes with sexy results. That or "fix" characters like Mousse refusing to be a punching bag and so on. Is it wrong that I prefer the AU stories the most? Ranma the Amazon etc? It takes something familiar and plays around with it sometimes even with original ideas - but in the back of my mind it's still the same old series that I love.
