Fear, especially that kind of bone deep dread that creeps up on you in quiet moments in the middle of the night, is intoxicating. That's why people watch horror movies and ride roller coasters. That's why people climb mountains and explore caves. Because fear, even while it's shouting at us "no, go away, don't go in there" is also whispering in the other ear "just a little closer... take another step... one won't hurt..."
And it's a good damn thing too. That's fucking evolution right there. Without that spark of madness, we never would have gotten out of the caves. We never would have mastered fire. We never would have fought beasts and conquered nature. We never would have set sail into uncharted waters.
Our brains aren't very good at processing strong emotions. The difference between love and hate is out in the fifth or sixth decimal place. The difference between pain and pleasure gets real real blurry with just the right amount of each and just the right kind. So too with fear. That's why rape fantasy exists. I'm pretty much the same. I'm not quite an agoraphobic but I'm pretty damn close. I never go out and party, I always feel anxious in public, and my main form of socialization is Dungeons and Dragons so I don't have to be me while I do it.
