No real tutorials exist as far as I know, I only fumbled across what I've needed so far.
Short example for what I did with my picture

>Background layer
>Leg layer
>Cut a mask around the legs
>Feather the mask if you feel like making the image look less cut and paste
>Apply wiggle/smear/liquify/whatever
Pic related, what my layers look like. I feel like this is enough to get someone off the ground. Fill in the dots with regular AE tutorials. I'm sure you could do the same with other video editors

Try using more contrast in your shading, you appear to be doing what many beginners do and shading overly cautiously.
As a means of learning, I would suggest attempting to cell-shade everything with either a light color, or a dark color so that you force yourself to quickly overcome any hangups about shading thoroughly. It will also help you to picture the form of the thing you are shading so that it doesn't appear flat, by making you assess whether the area is more shadowed or more well lit.
