since your active conciousness is essentially a program loaded into your brains ram, I look forward to the day in human history when we learn how to extract and transfer the conciousness program between brains, effectively letting you change bodies with another person. although you are still using their brain as the host so you wouldn't have any memories of your old self except whatever else was actively loaded into your short term memory so you'd need to collect a scrapbook of who you are and all your passwords and friends and whatnot, and the likelyhood of assimilating into the host body and just becoming who they were would be incredibly high.
but man, how wild would that be to just be someone else with the flick of a switch.
