Nah, not having a big anime tied to it is part of the series' appeal. There's just enough solid canon material for people to work with, with plenty of vague space for people to make up their own shit for it. All that extra wiggle room is what gave the fanbase the room it had to grow.
That, and there's no way they wouldn't screw it up in some way or another that would make it so most people would just ignore that it existed anyway.

Pretty much this, though I do have to say that the fanmade anime OVAs have amazing production values, are extremely high quality, and really goes to show that the Touhou fandom never fails to get shit done.
