A comission is one thing, but when you're telling me I need to pay you so you can draw something you want (that I have no control over), it's ridiculous. If you got to call the shots about what goes on for the page you funded (within reason), it'd be fine.
Do not misunderstand me, artists making money from following the exact orders of a customer (a commission) is a good thing, as they're providing the customer with a service and a custom product. However, this comic thing screams "this is some project I want to do, but I know I can squeeze money out of people by telling them I'll only do it if they pay me".

This is, in essence, crowd funding. Think like Kickstarter. You don't HAVE to pay for this, nobody actually needs to like you said. But if people want to see it and have the money to do so, they CAN pay for it and make it happen. It's really as simple as that. It's a choice, that's the whole point of crowd funding.
So if you don't like the concept of crowd funding, that's great. That's a fair opinion. But don't act as if this is some cardinal sin sucking the life out of the community. People that are interested can donate, nobody's being forced to. And when the donations have been made and the comic is done, it'll be free. Even those who didn't donate can see the comic. As opposed to, ya'know, Pizzabagel making it themself on their own time and then releasing it as a paid comic that only those who pay for it can see.
