I always felt that people missed the whole point of Miller's work. Everyone says that he portrays Superman as being a loser but Batman came across as a paranoid,bitter old man who could not swallow his pride for the good of everyone.

By 1982 there were over 20000 nuclear warheads in the world, spread out through continent-sized countries and their off-shore bases, all secured and most secret, the comic takes place in a future (to 1986, anyway) where the Cold War never stopped escalating, it's a stretch even for Superman to say that he got rid of ALL these nukes before either party had the chance to fire.
