I stopped watching season 2 after the Concord Dawn episode. After seeing the season 3 trailer, I realize I may have missed some stuff that elevates the show out of the "good guys always win" cliche. Will Rebels see a similar shift as Clone Wars did in its content and tone?

Different factors entirely. Judge planets by your size do you? It is a factor of mass and core composition. A dense enough object coupled with the ability to generate a strong enough electromagnetic field could maintain an atmosphere, sure.
There's other factors as well. The intensity of solar winds produced by the local star, for instance. Also Starkiller base is mobile so it likely has it's own shielding of various sorts, not just the defensive barrier against incoming attacks. It's been modified substantially, obviously.

Well they limit Vader's role. He wasn't supposed to completely eliminate the Rebels, merely drive them off Lothal and preserve the Empire's operation there. He did so. He also had a lead on them and did a fair amount of damage, but ultimately his job wasn't to wipe them all out. The Emperor still has Inquisitors to send on that errand.

Ahsoka's presence didn't distract him at all. His presence knocked her flat on her mental ass. While he changed his targets to the Ghost it was Hera's maneuver that snagged him.
Vader always did tighten his focus so much he lost sight of the bigger picture. Cue Han screaming YAHOO as he shoots up Vader's wingmen.
If you paid attention to the episode, while Vader made an effort to track the Rebels to their base he states at the end that his goal of securing Lothal was achieved and that the damage inflicted on them will send them running. I.. can't help but disagree. If she were related to a Mandalore, then why would she come from a House and not a Clan? You would think a descendant of a Mandalore would warrant them being born from a Clan. But she was born to House Wren, who owes fealty to Clan Vizsla.
Though that's not to say she can't ascend to the position. I would've always liked to think that the position of Mandalore wasn't hereditary, but based on strength and merit. I don't think Ahsoka was ever a general, either. She was a Commander, basically holding the rank Cody had in Obi-Wan's group of Clone Soldiers. She merely outranked the clones by virtue of being a member of the Jedi Order, but for the early seasons Rex, a captain, often had more influence because she was still very much learning her place. Experience trumps everything.
Was she a general in the bit Dave talked about at the end of the Clone Wars? He just said Anakin had a portion of the 501st placed under her command and they had their armor repainted as a tribute to her. She still only commanded a mere portion of a full Clone Army.

Anakin's actions during Ahsoka's trial was believing precisely what he wanted to believe and refusing to listen to any authority and doing what he wanted to do. Now the kicker is that he was right. He was able to find the clues that lead him to the truth, though it wasn't even a very hard search. When Padme and Obi-Wan couldn't get through to him, the two people closest to him it was clear he was beyond all reason. When he actually CHOKED Padme, the very person whose survival convinced him to betray Windu in the first place it was clear that he had simply lost every ounce of reason left. He was just chasing the Sith dragon, and you never, ever catch it.
Ben's worst bit is not exactly in the movie but the script makes it clear. When Han Solo tells him that Snoke is merely using him for his power and will ultimately destroy him the script points out that Ben knows this. Yet he just accepts it.
Vader would never have accepted being used like that. The Emperor was still his boss, could still try to arrange his death, but very carefully never set things up so they were personally drawn into conflict against each other. When Vader, in the comics, knows shit is going down he does make his own secret plays against the Emperor's own machinations. They are playing a proxy struggle against each other. Testing each other's boundaries and will. If Vader believed the Emperor wanted him truly dead and wasn't just testing him to see if he'd fail, then I think Vader would go straight for the old man's heart.
I know the thread yesterday was arguing whether Vader was some percentage of Sheev's power but I think it's telling that he never brought himself into direct conflict with his apprentice (that we're aware of). It's like with his fight with Yoda. He actually did try to run. Was that admitting that Yoda was more powerful? No. But I think he was afraid. He was worried because he knew there was a chance that Yoda could actually prevail. That almost did happen. If the explosion at the end of their Force duel went the other way and Yoda hadn't fallen the fight wouldn't have just ended.
I think no matter what the Emperor is respectful enough to be justifiably cautious about coming to blows against Vader. After all, they're the only two Sith left.

It's ... deceptive. It's hard to know what the dimensions of the ring are without the planet or anything else for scale. We just see a broken ring and the A-Wing zooming in.
Whatever the hell it is based on the amount of debris a planetoid certainly got the shit kicked out of it and that, apparently, took part of the ring with it.
Frankly it's hard to say because I'd argue that a planet with a ring around it blowing up should have totally fucked up the ring, but then we have Fort Anaxes somehow surviving.
