I always see a lot of talk about not being able to get into a series because of "annoying fanbases" but is this really that big of an issue? Or do you just not want to be associated with a certain community.

It seems pretty avoidable to me. I think once you're over 25 you kinda just stop caring about that sort of thing.
>>
I've never in my life given a fuck about a fan base insofar as my enjoyment of a property.
I think letting a fan base sway You that much is a symptom of weak shallow mind.

If I like it I like it. If I don't I don't. I don't care if it's got shit fans or is overhyped or overrated or any bullshit reasoning people use to show they lack critical thought.
>>
When I watch SU I'm admittedly a little observant of what would be likely to make tumblr go nuts. So I guess I am guilty of it to a degree.

But is that solely my fault?
>>
I think annoying fan bases should only ever actually interfere with you doing something if it's a multiplayer video game. Even if a shows fan base is annoying, you don't have to interact with them to enjoy the show.

Yes, because you are probably looking for things based on your knowledge of existential factors on the show. I mean, you're here, so I'm assuming you know something about the creators and their shit, so of course you're gonna look for that. It's not like you're a kid without the internet, it's kind of unavoidable.

It's only bad when the fanbase becomes outwardly toxic. It's rare though. I can't even think of any beyond the most obvious.
>>
its pretty effortless to be a fan of something while completely avoiding the community people built around it.

Living for other people's outrage is just as pathetic as living for their approval.

>hear about a thing
>observe the fandom to be full of emotionally and mentally unstable retards
>conclude that if a thing has so many fans who can't possibly have good taste, it must not be good
It's not that hard to understand.
>>
The Internet is not a series of tubes it's a collection of imaginary problems.
>>
>>84571753
Exactly. I really like Steven Universe but I never went to the generals or interacted with anybody online to talk about it. The fanbase is cancer (like any other one) but it doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the show.
>>
People tend to shrug it off by saying their keep their interaction with the show separate from the rest of the fans, but the issue is that the creators oftentimes do not do the same. Unlike say, the 90s or early 2000s, the trend of constant social media interaction between content creators and their fans means that a sufficiently vocial bad fanbase has a legitimate potential to run a series.

Live action tv shows are particularly susceptible to pandering when (see: Later seasons of Supernatural, Arrow, etc.) but there's a few choice instances of animated shows demonstrably being impacted in their writing based on vocal Internet fanbases as well: Adventure Time, Legend of Korra, and The Horse Show are programs that, regardless of whether or not you think they were impacted for the worse, all show clear signs of having made writing decisions based on Internet feedback.

I tend to avoid shows with bad fandoms because bad fandoms pose a legitimate threat of having a negative impact on a show itself these days that didn't exist before.

I really like Undertale. I am also 25 and an artist. I drew one quick fanart of it and got 123 followers on tumblr(which is art only, and I rarely answer questions because to me its somewhere I can just dump art) alone. It was one time and to this day I am still bombarded with how I should keep drawing it, why don't I draw it, people trying to talk to me about it, do remixes of songs(I make music very rarely and its not fan-related anything), animations(also rare), etc. It's a minor annoyance but still, it sorta ruined my ability to enjoy it with other people.

Not /co/ related but even with fanart in general. I do it rarely and now I just so it anonymously because people expect you to continue it and get upset if you don't. It doesn't bother me seeing something so much, though.

>Making what you want and not what "fandom culture" wants you to
Good on you, man. We need more people with that mindset.
>>
>>84571544
It is only a problem if you want to participate in fandom activities, like fanfics, fanart, cosplay and porn and porn with cosplay.

This.

Thanks! You say that but man I do wish I could at least stick to a theme. I'll go through wekks or months drawing nothing but paleontology, birds and plants for books, sudden switch to gore, then cartoons, short one shot comics, etc. Zero consistency in topics or style, as I am easily bored. I feel bad for those who watch me for something I may not draw again for some years but this is why it cant be my profession. I have been doing this too long and I know my limits. If it becomes a chore then no one will happy.

It's not avoidable if the fanbase directly affects the series. The argument was most commonly brought up with Homestuck. Which began as a Choose Your Own Adventure story. 100% relying on its fanbase. Then the fanbase became characters as trolls. That's a big issue.

The same thing happened to horse around season 3 or 4 when the fan favorite background characters started getting more spotlight and the show started appealing more to bronies rather than trying to be good on its own merit.
>>
An annoying fanbase doesn't have an effect on my enjoyment of something, but it does color my initial impression.

If a fandom makes something look stupid I'm usually going to think that thing is stupid and avoid it.
>>
>>84571544
cool
>>
The best way for me to avoid a cartoon is for rabid fans to bug me constantly about how much I need to fucking watch it.

Also there are reasons why I avoid calling myself a Homestuck fan or Sonic fan even though I've technically been a fan of both for years.
