Looking back this episode was pretty great.

Pretty unusual for character to realize his crush is trash and get over them.

Usually it's some stay friends nonsense.
>>
Newbie here. I missed this show growing up. Is it worth watching as an adult?
>>
>>84429245
Yes, very much so. The show actually goes out of its way to give each and every character their own bit of development. Each episode just leaves you with a nice heartwarming feeling at the end, and the show touches on some themes in a surprisingly mature way. It's one of the better nicktoons to come out of the 90s, and one of the gold standards for SOL western animation, go watch it right now, you won't regret it.
>>
That cheese festival would have been so tight
>>
>>84429245
It's good and it holds up better than most stuff from the 90s, particularly the latter few seasons, once the characters are really established.

Its only weak point, IMO, is that its heavily reliant on a vague nostalgic sense of Americana that mythologizes some kind of picturesque childhood filled with baseball, pie-eating contests, camping, Rube Goldberg devices put together from scrap, urban legends, etc. like if Stephen King was put on MDMA. These tend to be particularly bad with episodes about Arnold himself. The best episodes in the show focus on the side characters- Helga especially. They tend to be less precious about idolizing New York, America, childhood in general, etc.
>>
>>84429069
Too bad the other crush episode with the girl in green plad went with the negative extreme.
>>
>>84430595
I think it's biggest weakness is the extreme overuse of having a character say something like "that'll never happen!" and then immediately have that exact thing happen.
>>
>>84429069
Better if it ended in a shameful, semi-consensual handjob.
>>
>>84429069
That's look cool.

Arnold realized that he was judging Ruth simply by how she looked. Once he talked to her, he was immediately turned off by her vapidness and her self- centered attitude.

Batman Recess Ren and Stimpy Rugrats and Rocko still hold hold and actually age a lot better today apart from some 90s references these shows are timeless

I was really surprised, and I guess somewhat disappointed, to find out the show is supposed to be Chicago or Philly or something and not New York.

The whole thing feels so much like being a kid in New York. All the different cultures and freakish people forced to live together, adventures on buses and subways. Maybe that's just growing up in the city in general.
>>
>>84434742
To deny its existence is a foolish and futile endeavour, Anon. We must accept that it exists, but we must not let it define who we are.

I still wonder why they put Nadine here in the intro like she was one of the important characters, Lila would've been more fitting or just no 4th girl at all.
Did they have bigger plans for her or something?
>>
>>84437857

Best I can figure is since she's half black she vaguely acts as a counterpart to Gerald in the opening. She's basically as much as a character as Sheena or the other kids who mostly exist to occupy crowds.
>>
>>84435123
That's not her sister!
>>
>>84437857
I don't think they put much thought into that. They may have had the design but weren't sure yet if she was going to be a fairly important character or not.
>>
>>84433132
Rocko actually is very very dated.
>>84433222
If you only count good quality shows like HA and ignore all the horrible shit like that 90s Spiderman cartoon.

Which is why nostalgia goggles are false and misleading. People forget what was bad and only remember what was good.

Funny, if you listened to the likes of John K, shows like Hey Arnold would be verboten because kids only understand grossout gags.

This show had such bittersweet messages and morals. I cannot think of another cartoon that went to the places HA did. And even yet, it still managed to not be cynical, just realistic.

I mean, the one in the OP was basically "You shouldnt idolize your crush". But there were so much more. The one in >>84447463 basically said that Helga and Olga are just never really going to get along, and Olga will never understand why.

But I guess one of the morals that I most liked was the one where Stinky was a posterboy for a soda, but the marketing guys were just exploiting his weirdness and basically using him, so he turns down a million bucks because his pride wouldnt allow himself to sell out. And he doesnt really get congratulated for it, its a satisfaction that only he understands and only he gets to enjoy. He understands that his own self worth is far mre important then money and fame, and the show doesnt even glorify his decision, it just shows it to the viewers.

Anyone else remember when Arnold tutored Torvald? When he went into this neighborhood you can hear sirens, a shootout in the background and a woman screaming. That freaked me out back then.

>Its pretty tame looking back but when I was a kid I turned it off if I saw it was this episode
I did this with You Can't Do That On Television because of the loud-as-hell-to-me siren and the screaming head (that it's entirely possible I'm mis-remembering) in the intro and, of all things, fucking Sesame Street with that singing orange. I know now it's just Carmen, but shit that was horrifying.

Ok so ive heard of Timbox in Hey Arnold thrrads, but have no idea who or what a Timbox is. Is he just a really shitty artist or something?

She got pregnant with Olga in collage and had to drop out. She threw away her whole future to marry Bob and not have the kid out of wedlock. Think why they live though all of Olga's accomplishments.
>>
>>84484318
But she looked so happy when Olga was a little girl, she started drinking when she had Helga.
>>
>>84484485
Helga was probably an unplanned child.
Unplanned= unwanted. Would explain a lot.
>>
>>84484318
She probably started drinking when Olga moved away. You notice in later episodes she lights up like a Christmas tree when her daughter comes to visit.
>>
>>84447894
Wait, she fell a scene where she fell asleep in the shower and woke up masturbating?

Ever tried to explain to someone what it feels like to be humiliated for someone else? Just watch.

Wasn't the other half of the episode pretty awful too, or has my memory faded? What was the plot of the other half? As for me, I can't tell you what it really is, I can only tell you what it feels like.
>>
>>84495546

I found it. The other half is when Helga destroys the life of her nanny.
>>
>>84495629
What a depressing ending. Even as a kid I knew that it wasn't what you'd normally see in a kids show.
>>
>>84495977

Yeah that still bothers me. Anyway, roll credits on dead thread.

>>
Even as a kid, I was turned off by the art style.
I still am. I mean what the fuck is going on with his head? The only one who looks remotely normal is Helga.
>>
>>84496307
The weird part is that even the other characters in the show addressed his weird football head.

I guess Arnold was just canonically deformed or something.
>>
>>84495629
That's one of the best episodes.

No, sometimes in poetry collections and shit like they make you read in school if the author is unknown they put that it was written by anonymous. Apparently Ruth is an airhead who think "Anonymous" is a person's name.
